This is a language used to describe another language, known as the object language. For instance, in first-order logic, typical judgments might assert that a particular string of symbols constitutes a well-formed formula, or that a given proposition is true. A judgment can also declare the presence of a free variable in an object language expression or the provability of a proposition. Essentially, any inductively definable assertion within the metatheory can be considered a judgment.
Judgments play a critical role in formalizing deduction systems. A logical axiom, for example, expresses a judgment. Similarly, the premises of a rule of inference are structured as a sequence of judgments, and their conclusion is also a judgment. This means that both the hypotheses and conclusions of proofs are fundamentally judgments. Hilbert-style systems are characterized by rules of inference where the context remains unchanged. In contrast, natural deduction and sequent calculus include rules that can alter the context.
