Operation Plumbbob, a series of nuclear tests conducted in 1957, was not solely focused on the development of nuclear warheads. A significant and often controversial aspect of the operation involved extensive biomedical studies and large-scale military maneuvers, designed to understand the effects of nuclear explosions on living beings and military personnel. These experiments aimed to gather crucial data on radiation exposure, blast effects, and the psychological
and physical resilience of soldiers in a nuclear environment, highlighting the intense efforts to prepare for potential nuclear warfare.
Extensive Animal Experimentation
One of the most ethically challenging components of Operation Plumbbob was the use of animals in blast-effects and biomedical studies. Nearly 1,200 pigs were subjected to various experiments throughout the operation. A particularly notable instance occurred during the Priscilla shot, a 37-kiloton detonation on Frenchman Flat, where 719 pigs were utilized. These animals were placed in different experimental setups to assess the impact of nuclear blasts.Some pigs were positioned in elevated cages and outfitted with suits made from various materials. The objective was to determine which materials offered the best protection against the intense thermal radiation generated by a nuclear explosion. While the pigs reportedly survived, a PBS documentary titled Dark Circle documented that they suffered third-degree burns over 80% of their bodies. Other pigs were placed in pens behind large sheets of glass at measured distances from the hypocenter. This setup was designed to study the effects of flying debris on living targets, providing insights into potential injuries from secondary projectiles in a nuclear blast zone.
Large-Scale Military Maneuvers
Operation Plumbbob also featured the largest troop maneuver ever associated with U.S. nuclear testing, involving approximately 18,000 members of the U.S. Air Force, Army, Navy, and Marines. These personnel participated in exercises Desert Rock VII and VIII. The military's primary interest was to assess how the average foot-soldier would cope, both physically and psychologically, with the demanding conditions of a tactical nuclear battlefield. This direct involvement of a substantial number of service members underscored the military's commitment to understanding the practical implications of nuclear warfare on its forces.These exercises were crucial for military planners to evaluate tactics, equipment, and the overall readiness of troops in a nuclear combat scenario. The data collected from these maneuvers would have informed training protocols, protective measures, and operational strategies for future conflicts. Safety Experiments and Public Demonstrations
Beyond the direct impact on living subjects, Operation Plumbbob also included experiments focused on nuclear weapons safety. Studies were conducted on radioactive contamination and fallout resulting from simulated accidental detonations of weapons. These investigations aimed to understand the spread of radioactive materials and develop protocols for managing such incidents. Projects concerning earth motion, blast loading, and neutron output were also carried out, contributing to a broader understanding of nuclear explosion dynamics.One specific safety experiment, Pascal-A, detonated on July 26, 1957, was the first underground shaft nuclear test. This test, conducted in an unstemmed hole, provided data to predict nuclear yields in the event of accidental detonations, such as those from a plane crash. In a controversial public relations move, the John shot on July 19, 1957, involved five Air Force officers and a photographer standing directly under a nuclear blast from an AIR-2A Genie rocket fired at high altitude. This demonstration was intended to show the weapon's potential use over civilian populations without ill effects, a stark example of the public messaging surrounding nuclear capabilities at the time.
