As Hurricane Irma continued its west-northwestward trajectory after impacting the Leeward Islands, it set its sights on The Bahamas. Early on September 8, at 05:00 UTC, the eye of Irma made landfall on Little Inagua Island in The Bahamas. At this point, the hurricane was still a formidable force, carrying winds of 155 mph (249 km/h) and a central pressure of 924 mbar (27.3 inHg). This landfall occurred after Irma had been a Category 5 hurricane for approximately 60 consecutive hours, a duration that ranks as the second longest contiguous time period for a Category 5 hurricane on record.
