Thomas John Dempsey, born on January 12, 1947, and passing away on April 4, 2020, was an American professional football player who made his mark as a placekicker in the National Football League (NFL). His career spanned several teams, including the New Orleans Saints, Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Rams, Houston Oilers, and Buffalo Bills. What made Dempsey's career particularly remarkable was that he was born with significant physical differences:
no toes on his right foot and no fingers on his right hand. Despite these challenges, he not only competed at the highest level of professional football but also set a record that stood for over four decades.
Early Life and Unique Equipment
Dempsey was born in Milwaukee and received his education, including high school and college, in Southern California. From birth, he faced the challenge of having no toes on his right foot, which was his kicking foot, and no fingers on his right hand. To accommodate his unique foot structure, Dempsey utilized a special shoe designed specifically for kicking. This custom-made shoe featured a flat front and lacked a toe box, ending where his toes would normally begin. This specialized equipment was crucial for him to perform his role as a placekicker.
The custom shoe, which cost $200 at the time (equivalent to approximately $1,658 in 2025), became a subject of debate. Some questioned whether such a modified shoe provided an unfair advantage. However, Dempsey himself addressed these concerns with a memorable response, challenging critics to attempt a 63-yard field goal under similar conditions. Later analysis by ESPN Sport Science supported Dempsey's stance, concluding that his modified shoe did not offer an advantage and that a standard shoe might even reduce the margin for error.
Kicking Style and Record-Setting Achievement
Unlike the "soccer-style" approach to kicking that was gaining popularity during his career, Dempsey employed the then-standard straight-toe kicking style. This traditional method, combined with his unique physical adaptation and custom shoe, allowed him to achieve extraordinary feats on the field. His most famous accomplishment came on November 8, 1970, when, as a member of the New Orleans Saints, he kicked a 63-yard field goal as time expired. This kick secured a 19–17 victory over the Detroit Lions and set an NFL record that would stand for 43 years.
This record-breaking kick was not just a personal triumph but also a testament to his ability to overcome physical limitations through determination and specialized equipment. Dempsey remains the only player in NFL history to successfully kick a field goal from beyond his own team's 40-yard line, a distinction partly due to the goal posts being located on the goal lines prior to 1974. His legacy is one of resilience, innovation in the face of adversity, and an enduring mark on the history of professional football.
