This seminal work introduced a revolutionary method for blind and visually impaired individuals to read and write, drawing inspiration from existing military communication techniques. While the original system differed in several key aspects from the modern braille we know today, it established
the fundamental principles of a dot-based code, demonstrating Braille's profound insight into creating an accessible and comprehensive communication tool. His early efforts were not just about letters, but also encompassed specialized notations for music and shorthand, showcasing the system's versatility from its very inception.
Origins and Early Design Principles
Louis Braille's 1829 system was explicitly credited as being based on Barbier's night writing, a military code designed for silent communication in the dark. However, Braille's adaptation introduced fundamental differences. His original script contained nine decades, or series, of characters, a significant departure from the modern five decades. A notable feature of this early system was its use of dashes alongside dots. Braille himself recognized the practical challenges posed by these dashes, as they were difficult to distinguish from dots by touch. Consequently, these problematic characters were abandoned in the second edition of his book, marking an early refinement of the system.The structure of the original 1829 braille system was comprehensive, allocating different decades to various types of characters. The first four decades were dedicated to representing the 40 letters of the alphabet, which included the 39 letters of the French alphabet plus the English letter 'w'. The fifth decade was assigned to digits, while the sixth covered punctuation. The seventh decade, along with part of the eighth, was designated for mathematical symbols, and notably, the seventh decade also served for musical notes. Most of the remaining characters within the nine decades were initially unassigned, indicating potential for future expansion or specialized uses.
Innovating Musical Notation
A substantial portion of Braille's 1829 publication was devoted to the representation of music, underscoring its importance for blind individuals. The instrumental notation within his system largely mirrored an existing system already in use for the blind, suggesting an effort to build upon familiar structures. However, Braille recognized the need for innovation in representing the durations of notes and accidentals. For these specific musical elements, he ingeniously utilized the seventh decade of his character system.Beyond instrumental music, Braille also provided a simplified system specifically for plainsong. The twelve notes in this system were represented by the twelve characters found in the upper half of the braille cell, specifically from the first and fifth decades, which did not incorporate dashes. When these characters from the first decade were used by themselves, they indicated half notes. The system further differentiated note durations: quarter notes were represented by characters from the second decade, dotted quarter notes by the third, and eighth notes by the fourth. More complex durations were also accommodated: dotted half notes were indicated by a dash placed below the character (from the sixth decade), whole notes by a dash above (from the seventh decade), and dotted whole notes by a mid dash (from the eighth decade). Clefs, such as alto, bass, treble, and tenor, were indicated by the fifth through eighth characters of the fifth decade, and specific braille characters were assigned for sharp-note prefixes, bass-note prefixes, natural prefixes, repetition signs, and a character referred to as 'star'.
A Proposal for Braille Shorthand
The 1829 book concluded with an innovative proposal for braille shorthand, demonstrating Braille's forward-thinking approach to efficient communication. This shorthand system utilized the first decade of characters for vowels and the fifth decade for consonants, notably without making a distinction for voicing. A key feature of Braille's shorthand was its use of a 4-dot cell, which was smaller than the standard 6-dot cell used in his full braille system.This reduction in cell size had significant implications for space efficiency. Braille's shorthand occupied only two-thirds the space of normal braille, making it a more compact method for taking notes or transcribing quickly. Furthermore, it was remarkably efficient when compared to Barbier's night writing, taking up only one-third of the space that Barbier's system would require for the same content. This early exploration of shorthand highlighted Braille's commitment to developing a versatile and practical tactile writing system that could serve various communication needs, from comprehensive literature to rapid transcription.
