The Meuse-Argonne Offensive stands as the largest and deadliest engagement in the history of the United States Army. Fought from September 26, 1918, until the Armistice on November 11, 1918, this 47-day campaign was a crucial part of the final Allied push that brought World War I to an end. Involving 1.2 million American soldiers, sailors, and marines, alongside significant French and Siamese personnel, it represented a massive commitment of resources
and manpower. The offensive aimed to break through German defenses in the Meuse-Argonne region, a heavily fortified area that German soldiers had occupied for years.
Initial Thrust and Early Challenges (September 26 – October 4, 1918)
The offensive commenced on September 26, 1918, with the American First Army launching its strike north toward Sedan. This initial phase, lasting until October 3, saw American troops advance through much of the southern Meuse-Argonne region. They successfully captured enemy strong points and seized the first two German defense lines. However, the advance stalled before the third German line, encountering significant resistance. Several factors contributed to this early check, including a lack of adequate tank support, a challenging supply situation, and the relative inexperience of many American troops.
Despite these difficulties, the scale of the overall offensive, bolstered by the fresh and eager American forces, signaled a renewed vigor among the Allies. This sharply diminished German hopes for victory, as they faced a coordinated assault across the Western Front. The German High Command had systematically built fortified trenches and machine gun posts within the Argonne Forest, making any advance a formidable task.
Breaking Through German Defenses (October 4 – 28, 1918)
The second phase of the offensive began on October 4, with fresh divisions replacing the initial assault units. This period was marked by costly frontal assaults as American forces pushed to break through the main German defenses, specifically the Krimhilde Stellung of the Hindenburg Line. A notable event during this phase was the "Lost Battalion" affair, where a group of American soldiers was surrounded and later rescued by attacks from the 28th and 82nd Divisions.
Leadership changes also occurred during this time. On October 12, General John J. Pershing reorganized the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) and the First Army due to the struggles and casualties. He divided the First Army into two smaller armies, with Lieutenant General Hunter Liggett commanding the First and Robert Bullard leading the newly formed Second Army. Pershing, now focused on the AEF, also replaced several senior officers, believing they lacked the necessary aggression for the offensive. A decisive turning point was the capture of Côte de Châtillon between October 14-17, a stronghold within the Hindenburg Line, which was eventually taken by the 42nd Division after initial repulses of other units.
The Final Push and Allied Victory
By the end of October, U.S. troops had advanced ten miles and successfully cleared the Argonne Forest. To their left, French forces had advanced twenty miles, reaching the Aisne River. The offensive continued until the Armistice on November 11, 1918, contributing significantly to the overall Allied victory. The Meuse-Argonne Offensive, while costly, demonstrated the fighting capabilities of American units and played a critical role in the final days of World War I, leading directly to the end of hostilities.
