The Genesis of Mayberry
The concept for "The Andy Griffith Show" originated with Sheldon Leonard, producer of "The Danny Thomas Show," and Danny Thomas. They enlisted veteran comedy writer Arthur Stander to craft a pilot featuring Andy Griffith. Griffith, already a Broadway, film, and radio star, was keen on a television role, and his rural background and previous rustic characterizations made him a suitable choice for the part. After initial discussions in New York City, Griffith traveled to Los Angeles to film the pilot.
This pilot episode, titled "Danny Meets Andy Griffith," aired on February 15, 1960, as part of "The Danny Thomas Show." In it, Griffith introduced the character of Sheriff Andy Taylor, who arrests Danny Williams (Thomas's character) for a traffic violation. Crucially, future cast members Frances Bavier and Ron Howard also appeared in this episode as townspeople Henrietta Perkins and Opie Taylor, respectively. The pilot's success led General Foods, the sponsor of "The Danny Thomas Show," to immediately commit to the spin-off, paving the way for "The Andy Griffith Show" to debut on October 3, 1960.
Character Dynamics and Evolution
