Bronny James, born LeBron Raymone James Jr. on October 6, 2004, has been a prominent figure in the basketball world since his early years, largely due to his lineage as the eldest son of NBA star LeBron James Sr. His journey through high school and college basketball was closely watched, culminating in his selection by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2024 NBA draft. This path involved significant media attention, athletic development, and crucial decisions
regarding his professional future, all while managing the unique pressures associated with his family name.
High School Stardom and Early Challenges
James began his high school career at Sierra Canyon School in Chatsworth, Los Angeles, joining his younger brother Bryce and Zaire Wade, the son of his father's long-time teammate Dwyane Wade. Sierra Canyon's basketball program was already nationally recognized, having won two California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Open Division state titles. The team's 2019–20 roster was further bolstered by five-star recruits Brandon Boston Jr. and Ziaire Williams, who had transferred for their senior year. ESPN announced it would broadcast 15 of the team's games, indicating the high level of media interest. Despite this attention, James's father prohibited him from giving interviews.
His freshman season saw him debut on November 21, 2019, scoring 10 points off the bench in a 91–44 victory. A notable moment occurred on December 14 when he scored 15 points, including a go-ahead layup, and was named MVP in a 59–56 win against his father's alma mater, St. Vincent–St. Mary High School. He achieved a season-high 17 points on January 15, 2020. During a game on January 20, a young fan threw an orange at James, briefly halting play and drawing criticism from his father. Sierra Canyon reached the Open Division state championship final, but the game was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a freshman, James averaged 4.1 points in 15 minutes per game, playing in all 34 games of the 30–4 season.
Navigating Injuries and Increased Responsibility
James's sophomore season was impacted by injury. In February 2021, he tore his meniscus during practice and underwent surgery. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he did not play any official games for Sierra Canyon during the 2020–21 regular season. He returned for the CIF Southern Section Open Division final on June 11, scoring seven points in an 80–72 loss. The team finished the season with a 16–2 record. By his junior season, James's team was led by seniors Amari Bailey and Kijani Wright. He scored a game-high 19 points on December 4, 2021, in a win against St. Vincent–St. Mary at the Staples Center, a game where Bailey was sidelined with an ankle injury. Sierra Canyon lost in the CIF Southern Section Open Division semifinals, where James scored only 4 points, and later in the Open Division regional final, where he went scoreless due to a hip injury. He averaged 8.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.9 steals in 29 appearances.
His senior year saw James take on a leadership role, with his brother Bryce joining the team. In August 2022, he played three exhibition games in Europe, leading his team with 25 points in a loss to the French U18 Select team in Paris. A preseason exhibition game on October 29 was evacuated and canceled due to an altercation in the stands and a reported sighting of a gun, though no weapon was found. After missing the first two regular-season games due to illness, James debuted on November 26, scoring 13 points, 4 assists, and 3 rebounds in an overtime loss. He scored 25 points in his first home game on November 30. A knee injury caused him to miss four games in January 2023. Sierra Canyon was relegated from the CIF Open Division to Division I. James scored 10 points in his final high school game, a regional final loss. He averaged 14.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.8 steals, leading his team to a 23–11 record. He was selected for the McDonald's All-American Game, where he scored 15 points with five three-pointers, tying a record, and was also chosen for the USA team at the Nike Hoop Summit, scoring 11 points.
College Play and NBA Draft Entry
After his high school career, James played one season of college basketball for the USC Trojans. On April 5, 2024, he announced his intention to enter the 2024 NBA draft while maintaining his college eligibility and also entering the transfer portal. In early May 2024, James received medical clearance for the NBA draft. Reports on May 28, 2024, indicated he had at least 10 workout invites from NBA teams but only visited a "couple," specifically the Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix Suns. He ultimately worked out only with these two teams. He was then selected by the Lakers in the second round of the 2024 NBA draft, marking a significant step in his professional career and creating the first active father-son duo in NBA history with his father, LeBron James Sr. He is currently assigned to the South Bay Lakers, the Lakers' G League affiliate.
