What Are Expected Fantasy Points (xFP)?
Think of Expected Fantasy Points, or xFP, as a measure of opportunity, not just outcome. It analyzes every touch a player gets—every carry and every target—and assigns it a point value based on historical data. A carry from the 1-yard line is worth more
than a carry at midfield. A deep target into the end zone has a higher value than a short pass five yards behind the line of scrimmage. Essentially, xFP calculates what an average player would have scored given the exact same workload. The final number tells you the fantasy value of a player's role in the offense, stripping away the luck and randomness that often inflate final stat lines.
The Problem with Chasing Touchdowns
Touchdowns are the most valuable plays in fantasy football, but they are also one of the most unpredictable and volatile stats year-over-year. A player's final ranking can be dramatically boosted by a fluky number of scores that have little to do with a sustainable, high-value workload. When you draft a player based solely on last season's high touchdown total, you're making a bet that this unstable production will repeat itself. More often than not, it doesn't. This phenomenon is called touchdown regression. A player who scores far more than his usage suggests is a candidate for negative regression, while a player with a great workload but few scores might be due for a positive correction.
Using xFP to Spot Red Flags
The magic happens when you compare a player's actual fantasy points to their Expected Fantasy Points. The metric that tracks this difference is often called Fantasy Points Over Expected (FPOE). A player with a high FPOE significantly outperformed what his usage suggests. This is a major red flag. It tells you that his production was likely driven by unsustainable efficiency or an outlier number of touchdowns. For example, a running back who was 20th in the league in xFP but finished as the RB8 in actual scoring is a prime candidate to bust the following year. His ADP will be based on his finish, not the underlying volume that is far more predictive of future success.
A Tale of Two Seasons: A Case Study
Let's look at a classic example. Imagine a wide receiver in 2025, let's call him 'Player A,' who finished as the WR10. He had a modest 75 catches for 900 yards but scored 13 touchdowns. His draft price for 2026 skyrockets. However, his xFP ranked him as the WR28 for the season. His huge touchdown total accounted for a massive percentage of his fantasy points. Now consider 'Player B.' He finished as the WR25, catching 100 passes for 1,100 yards but only scoring four touchdowns. His xFP, however, ranked him as the WR12. He was getting elite volume but had terrible luck finding the end zone. The savvy fantasy manager using xFP would fade Player A, whose price is inflated by fluky touchdowns, and instead target Player B, whose superior underlying role suggests a bounce-back season is on the horizon.
It Works for Underperformers, Too
This analysis isn't just about avoiding busts; it's also a powerful tool for finding undervalued gems. A player with a high xFP total but low actual fantasy point production is a classic "buy-low" candidate. This gap suggests the player was getting a valuable workload but was either unlucky, tackled at the 1-yard line repeatedly, or perhaps playing through a minor injury that limited his efficiency. If you can project that his valuable role in the offense will remain the same for the next season, you can often draft him at a significant discount before his touchdown luck inevitably turns around and he smashes his draft position.
