An Explosive Return to Action
After being activated from Injured Reserve following a five-game absence with a knee injury, Dylan Sampson didn't waste any time reminding fantasy managers of his talent. In the Browns' Week 7 game against the Tennessee Titans, he was immediately mixed
into the offense and looked dynamic with every touch. Sampson turned six carries into 45 rushing yards and caught all three of his targets for another 32 yards. That’s a total of 77 yards on just nine touches, an impressive display of efficiency and explosiveness. Reports noted he looked 'spry' and showed no ill effects from his injury, making crucial plays that included a 19-yard run on a key fourth-quarter drive. This wasn't a case of easing a player back in; it was a statement performance that put him squarely on the fantasy radar.
His Role in the Browns' Backfield
Let’s be clear: Sampson is not taking over as the lead back in Cleveland right now. That job belongs to Quinshon Judkins, who also had a strong Week 7 performance. However, Sampson's usage was very telling for his fantasy value. He is firmly entrenched as the team’s No. 2 running back, but his role appears to be more than just a simple backup. Tellingly, Sampson ran more pass routes and saw more targets than Judkins in their first game back together, signaling a clear role as the preferred pass-catching option out of the backfield. This gives him standalone value, particularly in point-per-reception (PPR) leagues where targets and catches provide a reliable weekly floor. While you might not feel comfortable starting him every week just yet, he has the potential to be a viable flex play in deeper formats or during heavy bye weeks.
The All-Important 'Handcuff' Upside
The primary reason to add Dylan Sampson is not for his current production, but for his massive potential upside. In fantasy football, securing high-value 'handcuffs' — backups who would step into a starting role if the primary player gets injured — is a championship-winning strategy. Sampson is arguably one of the most valuable handcuffs to roster right now. The Browns have shown they will lean on their running game, and if Quinshon Judkins were to miss any time, Sampson would immediately inherit a significant workload. Given his explosiveness and pass-catching ability, he wouldn't just be a fill-in; he would project as a weekly must-start RB2 with RB1 upside. Finding that kind of potential on the waiver wire midway through the season is rare. Stashing him on your bench is a low-risk, high-reward move that could pay enormous dividends down the stretch.
The Verdict: A Priority Waiver Add
So, is he worth adding? The answer is a definitive yes. With a roster percentage hovering under 10% in most leagues, Sampson is widely available. He is the ideal kind of player to target on the waiver wire: someone who offers both a modest, immediate return and colossal contingent value. He should be a priority addition in all 12ndeeam and deeper leagues. While you probably shouldn’t blow your entire Free Agent Acquisition Budget (FAAB) on him, he is worth a strategic bid to ensure you get him. Think of him as an insurance policy with lottery-ticket upside. You may not need to cash it in right away, but you’ll be thrilled you have it if the opportunity arises. He is a bench stash who could anchor your fantasy team through the playoffs.
