He has tackled various political and national themes in his films and has consistently expressed his views on related controversies. In a recent discussion, he shared his passion for politics and political narratives.
John Abraham Discusses Political Cinema
During an interview with India Today, John disclosed that while he remains apolitical, he does not shy away from engaging with political narratives. Ahead of the launch of his upcoming film, Tehran, he stated, "With Madras Cafe... I experienced a moment akin to a waterfall cascading on my face. As a child, I opened my eyes to see my mother drawing the curtains, and I asked her in Gujarati, since my mother is Irani, Parsi... I inquired, 'Mummy, Suthayu, what happened?' She replied, 'Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated last night.' The images of him in his lotus shoes, his white kurta, and his expression... it left a mark on me, and I couldn't comprehend why my family was grieving over Rajiv Gandhi's death."
He further remarked, "And certainly, all credit goes to Shoojit Sircar for crafting such a remarkable film, and it all came together for us at that particular moment. Madras Cafe was the first project I intended to produce... Vicky Donor came about during that time, and we allowed it to take precedence."
Insights on Tehran
"I am fully aware of what I am stepping into with my eyes wide open, even with Tehran, I understood the stakes involved. However, in management, there's a saying, 'The greater the risk, the larger the reward.' Embrace the risk, find your voice, express what you wish to convey, and act responsibly. I believe people recognize this, they are just, and they understand, you know."
On the professional front, John's latest film Tehran is set for a direct-to-OTT premiere on August 14, exclusively on ZEE5.
