What is the story about?
Created by Sotiris Nikitas, Steal is a gripping thriller that unveils a new clue at the conclusion of each episode. The Amazon Prime Video series features
Sophie Turner, Archie Madekwe, and Jacob Fortune-Lloyd. Turner portrays the clever Zara Dunne, who finds herself on the run from the London police, MI5, and the criminals who see her as a loose end. So, what does Zara ultimately uncover about the true orchestrator of the heist? The finale may catch you off guard. Caution: Spoilers Ahead!
What happens to Zara’s closest friend Luke?
During the heist at the pension-fund investment firm Lochmill Capital, Zara (Turner) and her friend Luke (Archie Madekwe) are targeted by armed thieves to facilitate the transfer of 4 billion pounds from the pension funds to their offshore accounts. The two trading processors are back office employees, but the London police, led by DCI Rhys Covac (Jacob Fortune-Lloyd), quickly grow suspicious of them and place them under watch.
Despite being monitored, Luke is abducted by the robbers after experiencing a panic attack post-heist. Earlier, Luke had contacted Rhys, seemingly to confess something. Throughout much of the six-part series, Luke remains a captive of the robbers in a remote location until he attempts to escape by trying to bribe one of them. However, he is caught and taken to Zara’s apartment to claim her share of the money.
Are Zara and Luke involved in the heist?
Indeed, the first twist of Steal reveals early on that Zara and Luke were compensated with 100,000 pounds by the robbers for the money transfer. Later, they find five million pounds each in their digital wallets. The duo suspects that someone higher up is also involved in the scheme but cannot identify who it is. After Luke’s abduction, Zara learns that Milo Carter-Walsh (Harry Michell), a wealthy senior risk analyst and member of the investment committee, was complicit.
When one of the robbers, Morgan (Andrew Howard), arrives at her home holding Luke captive, she directs him to Milo, who has received 20 million pounds as part of his payment. Zara also discovers that Luke and Milo were collaborating, and she was likely selected to take the fall. At Milo's residence, Morgan and Milo confront each other, leading to the robber fatally stabbing him.
Where does the money end up?
Covac and his team, with the help of financial investigator Darren Yoshida (Andrew Koji), work to trace the money and find it in the accounts of influential politicians, billionaires, and well-known celebrities. Subsequently, the funds disappear from their accounts, taking some cash with them, while revealing the unethical practices they employ to maintain their wealth.
Who is the true mastermind?
Following a significant shootout at Lochmill Capital, where Morgan confronts the remaining group of robbers, only three individuals remain: Luke, Zara, and Rhys, who was injured during the exchange of gunfire. Rhys, who has been evading debt collectors due to his gambling issues, is released from the force. Luke and Zara also depart from Lochmill. In a surprising turn, the money is returned to the company, ensuring that none of the pension funds belonging to the everyday workers are lost.
In the climactic sixth episode, Rhys suddenly realizes that it was Darren, the investigator who had been an insider all along. He was the one who orchestrated the robbery and provided tips after the heist, even after he was officially part of the cast. When Rhys and Zara confront him, Darren admits that he never intended for anyone to be harmed but aimed to expose the corrupt financial systems that benefit the wealthy at the expense of the less fortunate.
Darren offers them 10 million pounds for their silence, but the pair declines and exits Lochmill. Rhys feels somewhat disoriented when Zara reveals that she possesses Milo’s digital wallet, containing 20 million pounds from the heist. Her 5 million pounds had already been seized by the authorities, and she concealed Milo's during the shootout. On her final day at Lochmill, Zara walks away a millionaire, having made a risky gamble that ultimately paid off.
