Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi-starrer Haq debuted on Netflix during the first week of January 2026, and it has since garnered significant admiration from
both viewers and celebrities. Alia Bhatt has also seen Haq and admitted that she has become a ‘Yami Gautam enthusiast’. Recently, Suparn Varma expressed his thoughts in an interview following the film's positive reception after its OTT launch. Suparn shared that he has received numerous calls from individuals worldwide, all praising him for Haq. The director mentioned that he anticipated the film would perform well after its release on streaming platforms.
Suparn Varma on Haq's acclaim following OTT launch
In a conversation with the Free Press Journal, Suparn Varma discussed the audience's feedback after viewing Haq on Netflix. The filmmaker had hoped that Haq would experience a significant surge following its OTT debut.
Suparn Varma stated, “I was confident that once it hit OTT, it would lead to a substantial leap for Haq. However, the audience's reaction has been just... I mean, sometimes you anticipate a wave, but you don’t realize how massive that wave will be! I’ve received calls from Nigeria and Canada, and it’s currently the top movie trending in Arab nations and neighboring countries like Sri Lanka and Nepal, everywhere. Every single day, I’m inundated with around 200 messages, calls, and DMs, so it’s been absolutely wild. And this morning (Sunday), I woke up to find out that Alia Bhatt had watched the film and adored it.”
The director also shared how he intentionally crafted Yami Gautam’s character in Haq to resonate with the audience. Suparn Varma elaborated, “In Haq, we intentionally designed our character of Shazia Banu as a Maulvi's daughter who, while not highly educated, had an in-depth understanding of the Quran – and that’s what I believe resonated deeply with audiences from all backgrounds. Because faith holds significance for everyone, and it is a deeply personal matter. The moment a third party begins to interpret your faith, it becomes influenced by that person's voice or perspective, leading to potential misinterpretation or misuse. This has been evident throughout history.”
For those unfamiliar, Haq draws inspiration from a landmark Supreme Court ruling. The film also features newcomer Vartika Singh in a significant role. Haq premiered in theaters on November 7, 2025.
