Vijay, affectionately known by his supporters as Thalapathy Vijay, was summoned for a second round of questioning by the Karur Stampede Case on Monday
(January 19). The actor and leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) appeared before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to respond to inquiries regarding the tragic stampede that took place on September 27, 2025, in Karur district, Tamil Nadu, during one of his political events. This unfortunate incident resulted in the deaths of 41 individuals and left over 60 others injured. As part of the ongoing investigation, the CBI has previously interrogated several TVK officials, Vijay’s personal chauffeur, and various police personnel responsible for security during the rally. On Monday, Vijay attributed the chaos to inadequate arrangements made by the police.
Vijay criticizes law enforcement
During the questioning, the actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay allegedly informed CBI officials that the number of officers present at the event was “quite inadequate” to manage the large crowd that had assembled in Karur last September.
During the questioning on Monday, which extended for just over six hours, Vijay refuted claims that he continued his address after the stampede commenced. He asserted to investigators that he halted his speech immediately, according to sources. The party and its leader attributed the stampede to “inadequate police presence” and “poor arrangements.”
Both TVK and Vijay have consistently argued that the absence of essential arrangements and the limited number of police officers at the site were likely factors contributing to the stampede. Vijay reiterated that the party adhered to all protocols established by the police and district authorities for the Karur rally, sources indicated.
Nevertheless, Vijay’s remarks will now be verified against the accounts of police officials. Sources mentioned that the CBI will also review documents and records concerning police deployment in Karur on September 27.
Vijay's previous CBI appearance
The actor had previously appeared before the central agency on January 12, where he was questioned for over six hours as well. He was initially requested to return the following day but sought a postponement due to the Pongal festivities. The agency consented, resulting in the second round of questioning on January 19. This investigation occurs amidst his challenges with the CBFC regarding the release of his latest film Jana Nayagan, which has yet to receive approval.
