Karan Johar's Dharma Productions is celebrated for his extravagant films and high-profile premieres, yet beneath the glamour lies a different story. The
director recently disclosed that his production company, despite its prominent name, does not generate the kind of revenue that many assume. He even acknowledged that Bollywood often appears much more glamorous from the outside than it actually is. Dharma Productions Is 'Nothing' When It Comes To Profits During a promotional event for Mirai, KJo remarked, “As the saying goes, our industry seems more appealing from the outside. When I engage with business leaders and other corporate figures, we are perceived as insignificant… They examine our profit and loss statements and ask, ‘Is this it? Is this all you have to show for your efforts?’ My reply is always, ‘In our field, we don’t focus on figures; we connect with emotions. We create films not with intellect, but with passion." Last year, the director divested a 50 percent share in his production company to Serum Institute’s CEO Adar Poonawalla, who is said to have invested Rsa 1000 crore in it. Box Office Has No Rules: Karan Johar Karan also spoke about the unpredictability at the box office in recent years. He noted that even films featuring major stars have flopped, while others with new talent have thrived, indicating that there is no guaranteed path to success. He emphasized that today’s actors recognize the significance of contributing to a film’s overall vision rather than depending solely on their star status. Karan stated, “There are various eras, films, and experiences. We have seen numerous films that continuously alter our narratives. Now, many musical films featuring newcomers will be released, but that doesn’t guarantee they will all become a Saiyaara. Animation films will also be introduced, but they won’t necessarily turn into Narsimha Mahavatar. The box office operates without rules.” Dharma's forthcoming production is Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor's Sunny Sankaari Ki Tulsi Kumari. It is set to premiere on October 2.
