A R Rahman finds himself at the center of a storm following his remarks suggesting that the Hindi film industry’s biases may stem from communal prejudices.
While many have rallied to support him, others have criticized his claims as unfounded, arguing that he has faced limited opportunities in the North. Recently, Kangana Ranaut disclosed that Rahman declined the chance to create music for her political drama, Emergency (2025). Renowned for his packed schedule filled with live performances, commitments in the South, and film projects, Rahman remains a sought-after talent among Indian filmmakers. However, he has chosen to focus on projects that inspire him creatively. In addition to Emergency, the seasoned music director has rejected several other ventures. As discussions about communalism within the Hindi film industry persist, let’s explore four films from various languages that the Grammy winner turned down. From Emergency to Ek Tha Tiger, Rahman was unable to participate in these projects for different reasons.
Emergency
In light of the ongoing debate regarding Hindi filmmakers' reluctance to collaborate with Rahman, possibly due to communal biases, Kangana Ranaut countered his assertion by stating that he declined to meet her for the film's narration. She expressed on Instagram, “I was eager to present my directorial Emergency to you; not only did you refuse the narration, but you also wouldn’t meet me. I was informed that you didn’t want to be involved in a propaganda film. Ironically, Emergency has been hailed as a masterpiece by critics, and even leaders from opposition parties sent me letters praising the film for its fair and empathetic portrayal, yet you are blinded by your animosity.”
Ek Tha Tiger
Reports indicate that A R Rahman was initially the preferred choice to score the music for Ek Tha Tiger. However, at the last moment, the music director withdrew from the project, leaving Salman Khan frustrated. Sajid-Wajid stepped in as guest composers.
Jawan
In earlier interviews, Atlee mentioned that he wouldn’t produce films without A R Rahman handling the music. Nevertheless, for Jawan, the director had to finalize a deal with Anirudh Ravichander, who delivered satisfactorily. Atlee had reportedly sought Rahman for the action thriller, which he declined.
Dasavathaaram
During the late 2000s, A R Rahman opted to focus on other Hindi projects like Jodhaa Akbar instead of Kamal Haasan’s Dasavathaaram, a Tamil film. The music director remarked, “I didn’t have the availability for Dasavathaaram; their timeline didn’t align with mine.”
In response to the controversy, Rahman released a video to clarify his remarks. The esteemed composer stated that he never intended to inflict any distress. He also emphasized that India provides him with a platform to express his creativity.
