The production company of Vijay's final film Jana Nayagan moved the Supreme Court of India filed an appeal on January 12, Monday, challenging a stay order
issued by a Division Bench of the Madras High Court regarding the film's certification. KVN Productions, the studio behind the film, approached the Supreme Court in response to a January 9 ruling from a High Court Division Bench, which suspended the enforcement of a Single Judge Bench’s directive to issue a UA certificate for the film, consequently delaying its release just before Pongal. In its petition to the Supreme Court, the production house has listed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and its Regional Officer as respondents. Initially, the producers sought relief from the High Court, arguing that despite the CBFC’s examining committee granting it a U/A 16 certificate, the Board’s chairperson had referred the film to a revising committee.
In Light of Censorship Controversy Jana Nayagan Filmmakers Approach Supreme Court
The production company informed the Single Judge Bench that an investment of Rs 500 crore had been allocated for the film, which was set for a global release on January 9, 2026. They also disclosed that the film was submitted to the CBFC for certification on December 18, 2025. The CBFC’s five-member examining committee viewed the film on December 19 and recommended a U/A 16+ certificate, advising a few edits. This outcome was communicated to the filmmakers on December 22. After implementing the suggested changes, the producers resubmitted the film on December 24. On December 29, they were informed that the CBFC would issue a U/A certificate. However, on January 5, the Regional Officer indicated that the CBFC chairman had opted to refer the film to a revising committee.
The CBFC clarified that one member of the examining committee had subsequently raised concerns that his objections were not adequately addressed. The Board also stated that according to the Cinematograph (Certification) Rules, 2024, the chairman possesses the authority to refer a film to a revising committee, and that judicial review of certification decisions is limited.
