Tom
Holland's Spider-Man: Brand New Day is making headlines even before swinging into theatres. The Marvel film generated massive excitement in South Korea, setting a new benchmark for first-day advance ticket sales among comic book movies released this decade. However, the momentum took an unexpected turn when ticket pre-sales suddenly halted just days after they opened. The move has surprised moviegoers and fueled conversations across the entertainment industry, especially with the film's release date drawing closer. While the sudden pause has left fans puzzled, the decision has become one of the biggest talking points surrounding the blockbuster's overseas rollout.
Why Spider-Man Brand New Day pre-sales halted in South Korea?
As per
Naver, Tom Holland's
Spider-Man: Brand New Day advance ticket sales in South Korea have been suspended just three days after they began. The film's bookings, which opened on July 8, around three weeks before its scheduled July 29 release, were withdrawn following objections from sections of the local film industry, which argued that the early sales disrupted the market. The Korean Film Council confirmed that advance bookings for
Spider-Man: Brand New Day were officially withdrawn on July 10.When pre-sales launched on July 8, distributor Sony Pictures celebrated the strong response, stating, "We immediately began full-scale advance ticket sales thanks to the enthusiastic support of the audience." The studio also noted, "Government-supported 6,000 won discount coupons for national movie tickets are being distributed on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 10:00 AM (KST) on the 8th. This is welcome news for prospective audiences awaiting the release and is expected to revitalize the movie theater industry." By July 10, the film had already sold approximately 103,000 advance tickets.Despite the impressive demand, the move sparked criticism from members of the Korean film industry, who questioned why advance ticket sales had opened before the movie's age rating review had been completed. Industry representatives argued that launching advance bookings three weeks before release, while the classification process was still underway, was inconsistent with long-standing industry practices. They noted that advance sales generally begin about two weeks before release, while some independent titles open bookings only a few days ahead of their theatrical debut. According to critics, allowing Hollywood direct distributors to operate differently creates an uneven playing field.
Commenting on the controversy, an official from the Korean Film Producers Association said, "The market disruption by direct distributors is tantamount to pouring cold water on the struggling Korean film industry," adding, "An amendment to the Film Promotion Act is necessary to address cases where legal sanctions are cleverly evaded."
