Anthropic has been eyeing ways to do things that are unconventional yet help humanity for a long time now. In a recent development, the company has announced a new initiative in its AI for Science programme, under which it will provide select researchers and early-stage biotech companies up to $50,000, which roughly converts to Rs 43,00,000 of Claude AI credits over six months to help accelerate research into rare genetic diseases. For those curious, the funding will not be disbursed in the form of cash; rather, the selected researchers will get Claude usage credits that can be utilised to run AI Models by Anthropic. This will aid the researchers in analysing scientific data, building AI-powered research tools with zero cost concerns, and reviewing
medical literature. As stated by Anthropic, this could be dubbed the firm's first call highlighting its AI for Science program. Anthropic said that it wants to build a community of researchers working on similar challenges so they can collaborate, share methods, and even fast-pace discoveries together. The programme by Claude maker is focused on research around rare diseases. According to Anthropic, more than 400 million people globally are estimated to be living with one of more than 7,000 rare diseases. Research related to the same gets limited due to the small number of patients and only bits and pieces of medical information related to them. Anthropic thinks that AI can remove this gap by analysing large volumes of biomedical data, identifying hidden patterns across diseases, summarising scientific literature, and even generating new hypotheses that can be used for testing by researchers in the lab. Anthropic has divided the same into two different streams: the first comprises clinicians, academic researchers studying the biology and mechanisms behind rare diseases, and scientists. The second stream is focused on biotechnologists and early-stage biotech firms developing therapies for rare diseases.
