Odyssey, written and directed by Christopher Nolan, is enjoying great success in India on its first weekend. The Hollywood feature has already become Nolan's biggest opener in India after surpassing his previous film, Oppenheimer. Starring Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland and Robert Pattinson, The Odyssey film is also released in India in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. On its second day, it raked in an additional Rs 22 crore and is poised to become another blockbuster in the country for the Hollywood director. Earlier, this month, the director and his actors Damon and Holland made a pit stop on their global press tour to premiere their film in Mumbai.

After earning Rs 17.40 crore on opening day, The Odyssey earned Rs 22 crore from 8,791 shows in India on Saturday, July 18. The film's total India net collections are now Rs 39.40 crore, and it should cross the Rs 50 crore mark on Sunday, June 19. Nolan's last film, Oppenheimer, earned Rs 14.45 crore in India on its first day, while The Odyssey crossed that by Rs 2.95 crore. Nolan's film has also been shot entirely in IMAX with Hoyte van Hoytema, who won the Oscar for Oppenheimer, and the Hollywood feature has seen great interest with audiences thanks to the A-list cast. The Odyssey has also opened with very little competition until the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, and the film could enjoy more box office success around the world.

Damon plays Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, who takes ten long years to return home from the Trojan War. Anne Hathaway plays Penelope, Odysseus's wife, while Tom Holland is Telemachus, his son. Both have been waiting for him to return. Ithaca is overtaken by suitors, including Robert Pattinson's Antinous, who seek Penelope's hand in marriage. Himesh Patel, Elliot Page, John Leguizamo, Jon Bernthal, Lupita Nyong'o, Samantha Morton, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron are also part of the ensemble cast.

Audiences and critics have given Nolan's adaptation of Homer's epic poem a big thumbs up, and the film is also eyeing a $257.8 million global opening, which should be the director's best ever. With an estimated budget of $250 million, The Odyssey is said to be the most expensive film of the Oscar-winning filmmaker's career. It was filmed on location in several countries, including Morocco, Greece, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, Western Sahara, and Malta.
