His longtime friend and one of the most famous fashion designers from India, Manish Malhotra, can be credited for many of his looks. Recently, Manish Malhotra’s collection was featured on the Paris Haute Couture Week, which Karan also became a part of. Now, the Kuch Kuch Hota Hai director has celebrated his colleague and friend for achieving this milestone and also recalled his contributions to the world of Indian Cinema’s costumes.
Karan Johar Pens A Heartfelt Note For Manish Malhotra
On Instagram today, July 9, director Karan Johar congratulated and posted a heartfelt note with a video from Manish Malhotra’s Paris collection. Karan could not have been prouder when he said, Manish was a boy who dared to dream beyond costumes, cinema and crossed all boundaries. Manish also taught the world how Indian couture deserves a space for its own, and among the finest, said Karan. He thanked him for teaching everyone how “passion meets hard work”. Manish’s Contribution to Indian Cinema
The director also reflected on their journey. Karan recalled, “It was 1990 when you made your debut as a costume designer with
Swarg,” and added how, since then, he transformed the language of costume in Indian Cinema. The
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai director hailed Manish Malhotra for becoming the “first-ever recipient of the Filmfare Award for Costume Designing” for the film
Rangeela.
According to him, the fashion designer gave people confidence, while also giving the Indian couture a “new voice”. The characters in the films received a soul after donning Manish’s designs. Apart from others, Karan thanked
Manish Malhotra for his own debut at the MET, which the latter designed for him.Karan also added that he felt privileged to witness Manish’s story as an audience member and his close friend. They marked their first-ever on-screen collaboration with
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, which, in his words, “strengthened their friendship off-screen”. He concluded the note by saying, “History is inevitable”.
Manish and Karan have also worked together for various hit projects that include
Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, where Karan was the Assistant Director, and Manish was a costume designer. For the unversed, they first met on the sets of Sridevi’s film
Gumrah, which was produced by Yash Johar, and this led to a stronger bond ever since. Other notable films in which they worked together are
Kabhi Khusi Kabhie Gham, Kal Ho Naa, and
My Name Is Khan.
