The
tragic death of a worker on the set of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's upcoming film Love & War has shaken the industry, with the All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) demanding strict action against the filmmaker and the production team. The association has called for the registration of an FIR against Bhansali, the production house and all those found responsible for the incident that claimed the life of carpenter Chandradhari Singh Yadav. In addition to seeking legal action, AICWA has urged the Maharashtra government to order a high-level investigation, provide financial support to the bereaved family and suspend shooting activities until safety compliance is verified.
AICWA demands justice for Love & War worker
The incident occurred on June 17 at Royal Pump Studio near Film City in Mumbai during the shooting of
Love & War. Chandradhari Singh Yadav, a 42-year-old carpenter working on the set,
lost his life while several other workers were reportedly injured. The development comes after the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) earlier stated that the worker had died after suffering an electric shock on the set and had sought increased compensation for his family. However, AICWA has now questioned the initial reports and demanded an independent and comprehensive investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
FIR against Sanjay Leela Bhansali?
In a letter addressed to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, AICWA president Suresh Shyamlal Gupta called for immediate intervention and requested that an FIR be registered against producer Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the production house and all individuals found responsible following the investigation. The association has sought charges under provisions related to negligence, culpable homicide and other legal sections that may emerge during the investigation process.According to AICWA, the accident has raised serious concerns regarding workplace safety on film sets. The association alleged that mandatory safety protocols were not adequately implemented despite
Love & War being a large-scale production featuring major stars including Ranbir Kapoor, Vicky Kaushal and Alia Bhatt. The letter stated that stricter safety measures might have prevented the tragic incident.
AICWA also highlighted the difficult circumstances facing Yadav's family. The deceased worker is survived by his wife and two minor daughters, making him the family's sole earning member. The association has demanded compensation of Rs 1 crore for the family. In addition, it has sought financial assistance or employment opportunities for Yadav's widow and long-term support for the education, welfare and future security of his two daughters.Among its major demands, AICWA has requested that shooting activities at the concerned location be suspended until authorities complete a thorough safety audit and certify that all mandatory safety norms have been implemented. The association has also called for safety inspections across film sets in Maharashtra to prevent similar incidents in the future.
AICWA brings up a history of accidents on sets
In its letter, AICWA referred to previous accidents allegedly linked to productions associated with Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The organization claimed that worker Dindayal Yadav lost his life during the production of
Devdas, while another worker reportedly died during the same film's production period. It also referred to the reported death of worker Mukesh Dakiya during the making of
Padmaavat. AICWA stated that long working hours ranging from 16 to 20 hours a day, combined with inadequate safety supervision, may contribute to workplace accidents on film sets.
The association further raised concerns regarding transparency in investigations involving on-set accidents, stating that complete details regarding such incidents and injured workers are often not made public. At present, neither Sanjay Leela Bhansali nor the makers of
Love & War have issued a detailed public response to AICWA's latest demands.
