Chris Evans has dropped a major clue for Marvel fans about what happens with Steve Rogers in the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There has been much speculation about Captain America's fate in Avengers: Doomsday, but the actor has now confirmed that his franchise journey will continue beyond that movie and into Avengers: Secret Wars. The news comes at a pivotal time for Marvel Studios, which is gearing up for two of its biggest crossover events since Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Fans are eager to know the superheroes who would manage to survive the multiversal conflict. As MCU gears up for Avengers: Doomsday on December 18, 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027, Evans teased something huge.
Chris Evans to return for Secret Wars
In a recent video shared by @comicconmomsi on Instagram, Evans confirmed that after Doomsday, he'd be back for
Secret Wars too. The handle claimed that the news was first revealed by what seemed to be a message that Evans left for a fan on March 26. In the message, Evans did not comment on details of the plot of Secret Wars, but he did confirm he is involved in the movie. "I can tell you that...I start work on the next one in a couple of months, I can tell you that," he said.
This statement essentially confirms that Evans' relationship with Marvel doesn't end at Avengers: Doomsday. The update will likely be a relief to fans who had feared Steve Rogers might be killed off in the upcoming film at the hands of Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr, who also returns to MCU, shedding his Iron Man.
What does this mean for Captain America's fate?
Chris Evans' confirmation, however, does not necessarily mean that the Steve Rogers seen in Avengers: Doomsday will live through the film. The Multiverse Saga in Marvel has brought a ton of alternate realities and character variants. This means that Evans could show up as a different version of Captain America in Secret Wars, even if his Earth-616 variant dies a tragic death in Doomsday.
Many fans speculate that Marvel might be using
Doomsday to set up the threat of Doctor Doom. Just as Marvel sacrificed a major legacy hero (Loki) early on in Infinity War to show Thanos' power, they could do so again to raise the stakes. If that happens, Steve Rogers will be in the company of characters whose loss will resonate most with audiences.
Marvel's biggest event ever is coming
Avengers: Doomsday is turning out to be one of Marvel's most ambitious movies. The film is being directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, the filmmaking duo behind Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. The project will bring together heroes from the MCU, the X-Men universe and the Fantastic Four franchise to battle Doctor Doom.Meanwhile, Avengers: Secret Wars promises to be the culmination of the Multiverse Saga, bringing together characters from all the different realities in a story that pays tribute to the classic Marvel comic event of the same name.
