Tamil
Nadu chief minister Vijay's film Jana Nayagan is all set to release on July 23. The film has recorded an impressive start at the box office, crossing Rs 15 crore in domestic advance bookings. Although the H Vinoth directorial is among the biggest openers of the year so far, it is yet to match the pre-release figures of Vijay's previous blockbusters, Leo and The Greatest of All Time (GOAT). Trade experts, however, believe this could narrow as bookings continue to open across key regions. The film's pre-sales also suggest that the earlier piracy leak has not had a big impact on audience excitement to watch the film.
Jana Nayagan Trails Leo and GOAT in Advance Bookings
According to industry tracker Sacnilk,
Jana Nayagan has collected more than Rs 15 crore in domestic Day 1 advance bookings, including blocked seats. While the figures rank among the highest of the year, they remain below Vijay's previous releases.
The Greatest of All Time (2024) earned Rs 29.83 crore in domestic advance bookings before opening to Rs 126.32 crore worldwide.
Leo (2023), meanwhile, recorded Rs 46.36 crore in Day 1 advance bookings, excluding blocked seats, before going on to collect Rs 148.5 crore globally on its opening day.
The film is expected to register one of the biggest openings of
Vijay's career, which is driven by the excitement surrounding his final film and his first theatrical release since becoming the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
Jana Nayagan Fell Prey To Piracy
The good advance booking figures comes despite Jana Nayagan suffering one of the biggest piracy setbacks in recent years. A high-definition version of the film surfaced online months before its theatrical release, worrying fans about its potential box office performance. However, the booking trend shows that the leak has done little to discourage fans from watching the film in cinemas. Vijay;s home state Tamil Nadu remains the film's strongest market with Rs 6.74 crore in advance bookings, followed by Karnataka with Rs 4.88 crore and Kerala with Rs 1.80 crore, showing demand across southern states.Director H Vinoth recently dismissed speculation that the leak originated from within the core team and revealed that the police eventually tracked down the alleged source. Recalling the tough situation, he told Behindwoods, "It was a huge heartbreak. It took us a long time to deal with it. This wasn't something that could ever be fixed. It was completely beyond our control."Jana Nayagan stars Vijay, Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Prakash Raj, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priyamani, Narain and Nassar, with music composed by Anirudh Ravichander.
