Featuring Vedang Raina, Sharvari and Diljit Dosanjh, the romantic drama opened to modest box office numbers. However, it witnessed a surge in collections because of positive word-of-mouth. Main Vaapas Aaunga fever is slowly gripping audiences. Recently, senior filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt penned an appreciation note for Imtiaz and his film. In a note that he wrote in a leading magazine, the director said he was moved by the thirst that runs beneath Vedang-Sharvari's movie.

Mahesh's note in Variety India describes Main Vaapas Aaunga as a film that quietly arrives, carrying the fragile cargo of the human heart. Going down memory lane, the director recalled watching Highway and feeling that Imtiaz had heard something that many of us had missed. He mentioned that beneath Highway's surface was the silent scream of violated young girls hidden within the presumed safety of homes and families.

"It may not have shaken the box office in the manner expected of mainstream successes, but it illuminated a dark corner of our collective life. For that reason alone, it remains important. The same instinct appears to animate Main Vaapas Aaunga. Many had declared it dead on arrival. That is often the fate of works that refuse to conform to prevailing fashions," he wrote.The filmmaker added that marketplace is entitled to its verdicts and speaks of the language of numbers. The numbers matter, he agreed. However, Bhatt also believes that audiences have a mysterious intelligence of their own. In some cases, audiences recognise the authenticity before the experts do. "The response to this film suggests that beneath all our cynicism, beneath the noise of our times, there remains a hunger for stories that speak to something deeper than our appetites," added Mahesh.

Main Vaapas Aaunga box office report

According to Sacnilk, Main Vaapas Aaunga collected Rs 1.50 crore at the box office on day 18, taking its Rs 47.85 crore. As far as its worldwide collection is concerned, the romantic drama made Rs 73.01 crore. Helmed by Imtiaz, the movie clashed with Kangana Ranaut's Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata and Vikram Bhatt's Haunted 3D: Echoes of the Past at the box office.
