DC
Studios' latest superhero movie, Supergirl, has crossed $100 million at the worldwide box office, but the news has been overshadowed by one of the biggest second-weekend drops ever for a film. The newest DC Universe entry, starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, has failed to leverage its tepid debut and has raised fresh questions about the franchise's commercial viability. Also starring Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, David Corenswet, and Jason Momoa, Supergirl has been directed by Craig Gillespie. It released in theatres on June 26, 2026, and received mixed reviews, with a lukewarm box office reception.
Supergirl plunges in Week 2
Supergirl earned $9.6 million domestically and $9.4 million internationally in its second weekend of release for a worldwide total of approximately $100.47 million. That's a whopping 74 per cent fall from its $37.1 million domestic opening weekend, making it one of the worst second-weekend drops ever for a superhero flick. Now it's fall, adding to a handful of high-profile comic book letdowns, including
Joker: Folie à Deux, Morbius, The Marvels and
The Flash. Industry analysts had already declared
Supergirl a box office disappointment after its $68 million worldwide opening weekend.
Supergirl disappoints
The film reportedly had a production budget of $170 million, with an additional $120 million spent on marketing worldwide. That means Warner Bros. would have to make money at about $300 million worldwide. The movie was previously expected to end its theatrical run in the $200 million range, but the huge second-weekend drop makes that goal less and less likely.
DC Studios reacts
That said, DC Studios says even if the film didn't do well commercially, it's only a small part of their overall plan. Following the film's average opening, DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran told The New York Times, "It's just one component of a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in." But Safran said Supergirl's box office doesn't change the studio's general plans for future DC projects.
Superman still leads new DC Universe
Supergirl has had a hard time getting audience, but the DC Universe itself is moving along with an ambitious slate of releases. They not only managed to successfully reboot the cinematic universe with
Superman, but future projects are still in the works, even with the setbacks of
Supergirl.Milly Alcock is also likely to return as Kara Zor-El, with the studio teasing that
Supergirl will continue to be a significant part of its ever-expanding story.
