filmmaker SS Rajamouli is now gearing up for his upcoming big-budget film Varanasi. The film will add to the slate of Rajamouli’s creations after films like Baahubali and RRR. Varanasi is expected to hit theatres next year in 2027. The star cast includes Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Prithviraj Sukumaran as leads who will play a part in his extraordinary visual storytelling saga. Recently, he spoke about how the film is nearing its finish, which will soon bring the film closer to all the fans and audiences awaiting its release.

SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi eyes completion

SS Rajamouli, at the Annecy Animation Festival, spoke about how the film’s finish line is near. He shared that the team has already completed the major chunks, which involved large-scale, big spectacle action sequences. The makers are now focusing on interconnecting scenes, and they hope it can be completed by September. “Maybe a little bit into October, we should be finishing shooting,” Rajamouli added.

Varanasi's IMAX update

The RRR director revealed that IMAX shooting did not influence his filmmaking creativity, as he believed the sequences they would be shooting would be best suited for that format. With only minor adjustments, he noted that his focus remained on making it look good in both the IMAX and CinemaScope formats. According to Rajamouli, “the anamorphic framing, so that took a little bit of adjustment for the first few initial days,” which they learned afterwards. He later displayed his excitement over IMAX theatres returning just in time for Varanasi in Hyderabad. According to him, people of Hyderabad and the Telugu region are "the biggest film buffs in the entire world." Earlier, when the dedicated IMAX screens were removed made him and others (film buffs) frustrated, but now he’s happy as they have come back.

What did Rajamouli say about Baahubali: The Eternal War?

Other than Varanasi, the Baahubali franchise's expansion into animation is also expanding with The Eternal War. It will be directed by Ishan Shukla, but SS Rajamouli stepped in, given the natural phenomenon for him and also the writing that he did. After Shukla developed a proper understanding of it all, Rajamouli stepped down. The colour, characters, emotions and their expressions are what make Baahubali a perfect choice for an animation format in the director’s understanding.

The film is preparing for its cinematic spectacle on April 7, 2027. Varanasi is produced by Narayana KL and SS Karthikeya, while Vijayendra Prasad joins hands with SS Rajamouli as the writer.
