India's private space sector is preparing for one of its biggest milestones yet, Hyderabad-based unicorn, Skyroot Aerospace, is all set to launch Vikram-1, the country's first privately developed orbital-class rocket, from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC-SHAR), Sriharikota, on July 18 at 11:30 am. Named Mission Aagaman, the launch will be the first attempt by a private Indian company to place a rocket into orbit from Indian soil. Ahead of liftoff, aviation and maritime authorities have already issued restricted-zone notices along the vehicle's planned flight path. Here's everything you need to know about this landmark mission.What Makes Vikram-1 A Historic Launch?Vikram-1 is a multi-stage orbital launch vehicle designed and developed entirely
by the homegrown spacetech champion. Standing roughly as tall as a seven-storey building, the rocket features an all-carbon composite structure and combines high-thrust solid rocket boosters with in-house developed propulsion systems, including advanced 3D-printed engines.The vehicle has been designed to carry satellites weighing up to 350kg into Low Earth Orbit (LEO). During its maiden mission, Vikram-1 will attempt to reach an altitude of 450km in a 60-degree inclination orbit.Mission Aagaman will also carry multiple technology demonstration payloads from Grahaa Space, Cosmoserve, DCubed and Skyroot's own SCOPE payload. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's handwritten postcard carrying the words "Vande Mataram" will also travel into space aboard the rocket. The launch will also carry "Cosmic Bloom," an artwork by Cosmos Diamonds, along with a micro-art payload.
