For a lot of us, while growing up, Gilmore Girls were a part of our lived reality. So it was quite shocking when we found out on social media that Netflix has announced that the beloved ,mother-daughter comedy-drama, starring Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel as Lorelai Gilmore and Rory Gilmore, will be leaving the platform, on June 30. However, there is a catch, the exit, as announced on X, formerly Twitter, was mentioned to be from the US. Needless to say, the news sparked an emotional reaction online, with many longtime fans expressing disappointment over the departure. But for Indian viewers, the big question remains – Is Gilmore Girls leaving Netflix India as well?Hold on to your horses, there is no official declaration that Gilmore Girls is being
removed from Netflix India. In fact, the series continues to be available on Netflix's Indian platform, where all seven seasons remain accessible to subscribers. Not only the OTT platform also features Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Live a limited series of four episodes which is set nearly a decade after the finale of the original and follows Lorelai, Rory and Emily as they explore their lives.
The confusion, on its part, stems from Netflix’s announcement, which specifically mentions the United States. Taking to Twitter, Netflix shared, “It's a show? It's a lifestyle. It's a religion. We are sorry to say that Gilmore Girls Seasons 1-7 will be leaving Netflix in the US on June 30. Raising a cup of coffee to every fan who visited Stars Hollow with us.”It seems that the streaming giant confirmed that the original seven-season run of Gilmore Girls will leave Netflix US at the end of June after a 12-year run on the platform. The decision appears to be linked to licensing agreements surrounding the Warner Bros.-produced series. However, what is interesting is that as per Entertainment Weekly, international viewers will still be able to access the series on Netflix after the US removal, suggesting that the licensing arrangement differs from region to region. And that distinction is important because streaming rights are often negotiated separately across territories. A show may disappear from one country's library while remaining available in another. Netflix frequently operates under region-specific licensing deals, which explains why content availability can vary dramatically between countries.Gilmore Girls has enjoyed a particularly strong relationship with Netflix. The series first arrived on the platform in the United States in 2014 and later expanded globally in 2016. Its streaming success was so significant that Netflix commissioned the revival miniseries Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, which premiered in November 2016.That the show is popular is undeniable. Even nearly two decades after its original finale, fans continue to revisit Stars Hollow and the lives of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore. The series remains a staple of comfort television, attracting both nostalgic viewers and first-time audiences discovering it through streaming. Another reason Indian fans need not panic just yet is that Netflix has not added any "Leaving Soon" notification to the title's Indian page. Typically, the streamer alerts users ahead of major removals, giving subscribers time to finish watching a series before it exits the platform. There is also some uncertainty surrounding the long-term future of the franchise on Netflix. While the original series is leaving the US service, reports indicate that the Netflix-produced revival, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, is expected to remain available on the platform for a longer period.Meanwhile, viewers in several countries already have alternative streaming options. Disney+ and Hulu currently carry the original series in select regions, and industry observers have speculated that Warner Bros. Discovery could eventually move the show to HBO Max in markets where the service operates. No official announcement regarding such a move has been made, however. For now, Indian fans, yes Gilmore Girls is leaving Netflix US, but there is no evidence that Netflix India will remove the series anytime in the future soon. This would only happen if Netflix announces otherwise. Until then, Indian viewers can continue their visiting and revisiting Stars Hollow, enjoy Luke's coffee, and meet the iconic mother-daughter bond that made the series a cultural phenomenon.
