Satluj: Ram Gopal Varma Calls Diljit Dosanjh Film ‘Deep Wound That Will Never Heal’

Dosanjh’s Satluj has now become a hot topic of discussion on the internet after it was taken down from ZEE5 in India within a few hours of its release. Despite its ban in India, many people managed to watch Jaswant Singh Khalra’s biopic outside India. Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has also watched Satluj and shared his honest views on it. In a long note shared on X, RGV called the Diljit Dosanjh starrer a ‘deep wound that will never heal’. Amid the controversy, the Rangeela director also used a famous quote by Ayn Rand – ‘Truth hits harder when one tries to hide it.’

In his X post, Ram Gopal Varma mentioned that he has been impressed by the execution of such a sensitive subject without any sensationalism. He praised director Honey Trehan for his direction. He mentioned, “This restraint makes the brutality of the subject matter hit that much harder because it explodes with the force of truth and not exploitation.” (sic) According to RGV, Satluj stirs up the sludge in one of the darkest chapters of Indian history. The veteran filmmaker especially applauded Diljit Dosanjh and Arjun Rampal for their performances in the film. While explaining the philosophical core of Satluj, he said that it is about how a democracy devours its own citizens and then tries to erase the evidence. He confessed that the director explored such elements without any preachiness.

He called Honey Trehan’s filmmaking courageous because it unsettles, educates and lingers. Ram Gopal Varma also pointed out that Sutlaj gives a hard reminder of what the cinematic medium can truly achieve when it takes on truth and honesty. While concluding his note, Ram Gopal Varma requested the government to allow the film in India. He wrote, “SATLUJ is a film that has to be seen , shown, discussed, debated and not ENCOUNTERED like the victims in the film. My appeal to all the powers is , please don’t do to SATLUJ what has been done to JASWANT SINGH KALRA.” (sic)

Honey Trehan Reacts To RGV’s Views On Satluj

Director Honey Trehan is overwhelmed by the responses from Ram Gopal Varma. In a reply to the post, Honey wrote that he is truly honoured after receiving positive reviews from him. He wrote, “Im glad to know the film resonated with you. i couldn’t have achieved this specially without the tremendous support from my producers @RonnieScrewvala and bhaji @diljitdosanjh.” (sic)

After Satluj was taken down from ZEE5 in India, many netizens expressed disappointment over the Ministry of Information and Broadcast’s decision. Hence, they have now formed an interdepartmental committee to examine the content of the Diljit Dosanjh film. The IDC panel is empowered to make recommendations to the centre on the content-related complaints. Diljit Dosanjh had already said in his live after a ban that he had anticipated this action before the film’s release. He further revealed that many people have already downloaded Satluj.
