Milly Alcock's Supergirl Undergoes CBFC Cuts In India; Explicit Language Gets Axed

Alcock and Jason Momoa’s Supergirl releases globally on June 26. It is the second movie in the new DC universe that follows James Gunn's Superman. Directed by Craig Gillespie, the film also stars David Corenswet as Superman. Ahead of its release in India, the Central Board of Film Certification has suggested some edits and modifications to the version releasing in the country. The film releases internationally with those scenes and dialogues intact. The Indian censor board’s suggested cuts in Supergirl went viral on social media.

According to the censor board’s certificate, Supergirl’s final runtime is 109.58 minutes (1 hour and 49 minutes and 58 seconds). The CBFC asked the makers to add anti-alcohol and anti-smoking static wherever necessary in the film. The board instructed to delete f**k, screwed, bitch, and balls from the subtitles and audio and also remove the middle finger visual, and the word "screwed" from the subtitle and audio.

What is Supergirl about

Supergirl is based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s comic book, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. In a previous interview with Screen Rant, James Gunn shared, “In our story, we have Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by incredibly loving parents. Kara was on Krypton. She was on a piece of Krypton that drifted away from the planet, and she lived there for the first 14 years of her life in a horrible situation where she watched everyone around her die. So, she’s a much harsher and more f*cked up Supergirl than you’ve been used to thus far.”

How is Supergirl different from Superman

Supergirl is said to be darker than Superman, as she has witnessed traumatic incidents in the past. The film sheds light on complex subplots like identity, trauma, and the complexities of female empowerment. It isn’t another superhero film, as Supergirl focuses on the challenges Kara Zor-El faces as a woman shaped by her past. It aims to present a multifaceted portrayal of strength and resilience, encouraging audiences to connect with her journey on a deeper level.

Supergirl is written by Ana Nogueira. After this, Milly and Jason are expected to return in Superman's sequel, Man of Tomorrow, which went on floors recently. The film will be released globally on July 9, 2027.
