Thalapathy Vijay's Jana Nayagan has finally hit the cinemas, putting an end to months of speculation, delays and anticipation. The political action drama, directed by H. Vinoth, released to packed theatres and an enthusiastic response from fans on July 23, and has become one of the biggest Tamil releases of the year. The action-packed drama is Thalapathy's last film before he dives full-time into politics, after winning the election and taking the oath as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu this year. However, one question that is ruling the conversations of moviegoers is beyond theatrical performance: when will Jana Nayagan arrive on OTT and which streaming platform will bag Vijay's final film? The makers are yet to make an official announcement, but
several reports shed light on the negotiations over the film's digital rights.
No official OTT platform yet
There is a lot of speculation, but
Jana Nayagan does not have any confirmed streaming platform as of now. No OTT service or KVN Productions has officially announced where the film will stream after its theatrical run. But two big platforms were reported to have been interested in acquiring the digital rights.
Prime Video first approached
Earlier reports said Prime Video had entered into negotiations to buy the digital rights of the film for around Rs 110 crore. But the deal never came together after the movie was repeatedly pushed back. The discussions were also rehashed after industry claims said that the movie's digital performance was affected by the online piracy leak of the film ahead of its release. The reported deal has attracted much attention but was not confirmed as having been agreed to by Prime Video or the producers.
ZEE5 enters negotiations
Following reports that talks with Prime Video had stalled, industry chatter turned to ZEE5. According to an NDTV report, the platform had offered about Rs 50 crore for the streaming rights. Again, there has been no official word from the streaming service or the production house regarding these discussions, and the final destination of the film remains unknown. All reported figures are speculative until an official announcement.
Did OTT talks impact release date?
Interestingly, reports suggest that the theatrical release strategy for the film may have been affected by streaming negotiations. Some distributors have reportedly decided to release
Jana Nayagan a day later so as not to face direct competition with Christopher Nolan's
The Odyssey. But sources said that the potential OTT partner was looking for an earlier theatrical release and the movie would be able to complete its cinema window in time for a possible Independence Day weekend digital release. The filmmakers have not confirmed these reports.
Vijay bids tearful farewell to cinema
Jana Nayagan is special for being the last feature film of Vijay before he takes a plunge into politics wholeheartedly. And after winning the election and taking the oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Vijay announced that he has decided to give up acting to dedicate himself to public service. The film has been received by the masses as a commercial entertainer and a farewell for one of the biggest stars of Tamil cinema.
