With
the launch of new artificial intelligence models everyday, the race to lead the AI industry is getting more intense. Earlier this week, OpenAI announced plans to introduce its latest GPT-5.6 models. Now, Elon Musk has launched Grok 4.5, its newest AI model for coding and agentic tasks. Claiming to offer better performance, faster responses and lower costs, Musk is making it clear that he wants SpaceXAI to compete strongly with rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic.
What Is Grok 4.5 AI?
Musk’s SpaceXAI has described the
Grok 4.5 as its most capable AI model so far. The company says it has been designed for mainly software development and AI agents that can execute complex tasks with minimal human input. According to SpaceXAI, the latest model is trained using tens of thousands of Nvidia GB300 graphics processing units (GPUs). The company has also stressed that it bested heavily in improving the quality of its training data by removing duplicate information and filtering low-quality content. The Grok 4.5 is available through Grok Build, the coding platform of SpaceXAI. Developers can also access the model through the SpaceXAI Console using an API key. Notably, the model has been trained in partnership with Cursor. For those who are unaware, SpaceX announced plans last month to acquire Anysphere, the company behind Cursor.
Musk shared the details on Grok 4.5 and asserted that it is an “Opus-class” AI model but offers faster performance, better token efficiency and lower operating costs. The AI startup has set the cost at $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens. While Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8 costs $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens. As per
SpaceXAI, the Grok 4.5 is expected to become available in the European Union by the middle of this month. The timing of Grok 4.5's launch is noteworthy. OpenAI has confirmed to publicly launch its GPT-5.6 family of models on Thursday after a brief delay linked to US government national security reviews. With Grok 4.5 now entering the market, the competition between Musk's SpaceXAI, OpenAI and Anthropic is becoming even more intense.
