filmmaker R Chezhiyan passed away at the age of 57 on July 10 in Chennai. Ever since the news broke, the entire film industry and fans have been mourning the National Award-winning cinematographer. According to the reports by News18, Chezhiyan was suffering from prolonged illness and was going through a treatment at a private hospital in Taramani. Amid his ongoing medical treatment, he succumbed this morning. Chezhiyan was known for his filmography that boasted of writing, direction and many other credits in the Tamil cinema. Chezhiyan’s popular works include Kalloori, Pardesi and Joker. He made his directorial debut with the highly acclaimed 2017 Tamil film To Let.

The director was regarded as one of the finest in the Tamil film industry. He started his journey as an engineering student. Upon completing his degree, he decided to follow his passion and started his career by assisting the legendary photographer P.C. Sreeram. His passion for cinema and photography has reflected in his work since his debut in
Kalloori in 2007.

R Chezhiyan has led various critically acclaimed films as an exceptional cinematographer, such as
Rettaisuzhi, Magizhcihi and
Thenmerku Paruvakaatru. The latter won him the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil. His craft in the film
Pardesi also earned him the title of Best Cinematographer at the London International Film Festival.
He made his directorial debut with
To Let, which was released in 2017 and also won the National Film Award for Best Tamil Feature Film at the 65th National Film Awards. The same film also won him Best Cinematographer at the Milan International Film Festival.
