What is the story about?
It’s
been a while since a mid-premium pair of headphones got me excited. The brands in this price segment usually sacrifice build quality for battery life or cut corners on noise cancellation to give you decent sound. With the new JBL Live 780NC over-ear headphones, JBL is making a strong case for a "no-compromises" mid-ranger. Priced at Rs 15,999 (with some killer launch incentives), these cans bring flagship-level specs. They come with Bluetooth 6.0, LDAC support and a 80-hour battery life at an impressive price point. After putting them through a week of heavy testing, including a chaotic short trip to Mumbai and multiple intense gym sessions, here is our comprehensive breakdown of how they perform in the real world.
Design, Build And Comfort
Right out of the box, the JBL Live 780NC stands out with its vibrant color palette. JBL has moved away from the boring monopoly of matte black and grey, offering these in Black, Blue, White, Champagne, Green, Orange and Purple. These are some really interesting choices and lets your headphones double as a fashion accessory. Tipping the scales at a mere 260 grams, these are exceptionally lightweight for a pair of feature-packed over-ear headphones. The foldable design makes them incredibly easy to collapse and throw into a backpack, making them an ideal travel companion. Despite the approachable price tag, the build quality feels robust. The plastics are high-grade, the hinges rotate smoothly without creaking, and the overall aesthetic feels premium. If there is one minor gripe about the ergonomics, it is the clamping force. Out of the box, the headband exerts a slightly high level of pressure against the sides of the head. While this is great for passive noise isolation and keeping the headphones secure during quick movements, it can cause a bit of fatigue during marathon listening sessions. Thankfully, the generous ear-cup cushioning helps mitigate this and the headband will likely loosen slightly with extended use.Audio Performance
JBL is famous for its signature bass-forward sound signature, but the Live 780NC marks a shift toward a more mature, refined audio profile. These headphones are equipped with 40mm dynamic drivers and high-resolution LDAC codec support for compatible devices. They deliver a remarkably balanced acoustic experience. To test the soundstage and separation, we queued up Anuv Jain’s Alag Aasman. The headphones managed a beautiful layer of separation: the crisp, acoustic strumming of the guitar sat cleanly on the left and right channels, while the gentle vocals remained front and center without being muddy or drowned out.On the flip side, switching to an energetic Bollywood pop track like Aai Pappi proved that JBL hasn't forgotten how to party. The track felt incredibly punchy, driven by a tight, fast-responding bassline that didn't bleed into the vocals. Even after all these years, the track feels incredibly fresh and the Live 780NC handles its energetic arrangement with absolute ease. For those who want to tweak their experience, the headphones offer:- Personi-Fi 3.0: Conducts a quick hearing test via the app to tailor the audio frequencies specifically to your unique ears.
- JBL Spatial Sound 3.0: Adds an immersive, theater-like dimension to movies and gaming.
- Low Volume EQ: Retains a full bass and treble response even when you are listening at whisper-quiet levels.
