Studios and Sony Pictures seem to have another box office phenomenon on their hands, as Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to exceed expectations ahead of its theatrical release. The latest tracking reports suggest Tom Holland's return as Peter Parker is on course for one of the biggest opening weekends in movie history, with projections climbing dramatically over the past few weeks. The film also brings back Zendaya and Jacob Batalon, along with Mark Ruffalo, while marking the MCU debut of Stranger Things star Sadie Sink. Opening estimates continue to grow

The latest industry tracking has Spider-Man: Brand New Day opening in the $260 million to $300 million range at the North American box office. If the film lands at the high end of that range, it would top the opening weekend of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which grossed $260.1 million domestically in December 2021. According to Comicbasics, that number is now the second biggest domestic opening weekend of all time, second only to Avengers: Endgame.

Presales drive rising optimism

Upward revisions have been mostly due to extraordinary sales of advance tickets. The film already had the best first day presales for weeks, since No Way Home. Since then, reports suggest demand has picked up even more, with a rush of ticket purchases in the final days before release. The upward trend shows that the analysts are growing more confident that audience demand is exceeding initial projections.

Forecasts are growing very fast

The latest estimates are a big jump from previous tracking. Initial estimates had the domestic opening at $180 million-$190 million, which would have made it one of the biggest launches of the year. Those numbers were later increased to around $230 million to $250 million, before rising again to the current $260-$300 million estimate. The steady climb has made the movie one of the most closely-watched box office stories in the industry.

IMAX limitation fails to stem demand

One of the things that will probably help the movie do well is that it won't have the benefit of IMAX screens during its opening weeks. Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is running in IMAX theatres on a three-week booking basis, which means Brand New Day is limited to other premium large-format auditoriums. That limitation aside, the advance sales continue to strengthen, suggesting audiences are hungry for the latest Spider-Man adventure no matter what format is available.

Hope of billion dollars rises

This puts the film in a good position to cross $1 billion worldwide, industry observers believe. If it does, it would be the first Marvel Cinematic Universe release to do so since Deadpool & Wolverine. The movie could also get a boost from China, where it will release simultaneously.
