The state of Florida is suing TikTok over claims that the firm is not complying with the state's child safety law, which bans kids under 14 from creating social media accounts. According to a report by Reuters, the lawsuit was filed on Monday, suggesting that TikTok still allows 13 year-olds in Florida to use the platform and is 'actively deceiving' parents about its risks. Furthermore, TikTok is also accused of failing to require 14 and 15 year-olds to obtain parental consent before signing up to the platform, in violation of Florida’s social media law. The HB3 law initially came into action on January 1, 2025, but a federal judgle blocked it in the middle of a legal battle. An appeals court reversed the ruling late last year, allowing the law to take
effect. Apart from that, the State of Florida filed a similar lawsuit against Snap when HB3 was applied in the state.WhatsApp To Soon Bring One View Text For Users, All Details Here
TikTok US spokesperson Jamie Favazza told The Verge that the company has been engaging constructively and in good faith with Florida's attorney general. She also said that the platform 'notified users under 14 in Florida that their accounts will be suspended.'What's more is that the Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier claims TikTok doesn't comply with consumer protection laws as well by 'lying' to parents about the content inside the application. The lawsuit claims, 'Even though videos with alcohol, tobacco, and drug content are readily available on TikTok, Defendants tell consumers in the App Store that ‘alcohol, tobacco, and drug... references’ are ‘infrequent/mild’ on the platform.' It also says that TikTok has been designed to be 'addictive' to children and teens. For those unaware, most of the social media platforms, including TikTok, Youtube, and Meta platforms, are facing lawsuits suggesting that they failed to protect the kids.
