Tamil filmmaker, actor, producer and writer K Bhagyaraj died on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at the age of 73 after reportedly suffering a massive heart attack. He was rushed to Apollo Hospital, where doctors attempted to revive him, but he could not be saved. Earlier this year, Bhagyaraj celebrated both his 73rd birthday and 50 years in the Indian film industry. K Bhagyaraj Early LifeK Bhagyaraj was born in Vellankoil near Gobichettipalayam in 1953. He entered the Tamil film industry in the mid-1970s as an assistant director under G Ramakrishnan and
Bharathiraja. During this period, he also began contributing as a dialogue writer and took on small acting roles in films. He was associated with Bharathiraja’s 16 Vayathinile (1977) and made a cameo in Sigappu Rojakkal (1978), for which he also wrote dialogues. He worked as an assistant director on films such as Kizhakke Pogum Rail (1978).

Bhagyaraj made his directorial debut with
Suvarilladha Chiththirangal (1979). However, he rose to prominence after directing films like
Darling, Darling, Darling (1982) and Mundhanai Mudichu (1983), which established his storytelling style. He is known for showcasing humour, romance, family drama, and social commentary, with films portraying by female-oriented issues, relationships in relatable middle-class characters, and witty dialogues. In Hindi cinema. he has directed Amitabh Bachchan's film Aakhree Raasta.
K Bhagyaraj's First WifeBhagyaraj was first married actress Praveena. When Bhgayaraj struggled for years to establish himself in the film industry, facing financial problems during this phase, he met aspiring actor Praveena, who sought his help in learning Tamil to improve her chances in films. As they spent time together, the two fell in love.
Bhagyaraj promised that he would return one day after establishing a name in cinema and marry her. Years later, while working on his directorial debut Suvarilladha Chiththirangal, he met with Praveena and fulfilled that promise by marrying her. After suffering complications from pregnancies, and jaundice she passed away leaving Bhagyaraj heartbroken. The couple never had children together.
K Bhagyaraj's Second Wife And ChildrenIn 1984, Bhagyaraj married actor Poornima, who was one of the leading stars of the Tamil and Malayalam film industries at the time. The two grew close after Poornima invited him to her home during the Dussehra celebrations. Bhagyaraj later recalled that it was during their conversation that he realised he had developed feelings for her. The couple eventually got married and are parents to two children, actors Shanthanu Bhagyaraj and Saranya Bhagyaraj.
Saranya is a fashion designer, while Shanthanu is an actor. Their son, Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, began his career as a child artist in his father's Vettiya Madichu Kattu (1998) before making his debut as a lead actor with the romantic comedy Sakkarakatti (2008). Their daughter, Saranya Bhagyaraj, made her acting debut in Parijatham (2006), a Tamil romantic drama written and directed by her father, K. Bhagyaraj.

K Bhagyaraj made his final public appearance at the wedding of actor-politician Khushbu Sundar and director Sundar C.'s daughter, Avantika, held at a luxury resort in Goa on June 25. Dressed in traditional attire, he was seen warmly greeting guests, blessing the newlyweds, and interacting with several people of the Tamil film industry. A video from the ceremony also captured Bhagyaraj sharing a warm greeting with veteran actor Chiranjeevi.
K Bhagayraj's Final Year In CinemaK Bhagyaraj celebrated his 73rd birthday and completed 50 years in the Indian film industry at a grand event titled Bhagyaraj 50 on January 7, 2026. Held at Chennai's the event saw former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Ilaiyaraaja, Mohan Babu and several other prominent personalities, who gathered to honour Bhagyaraj's five-decade contribution to Indian cinema.
