Shabana Azmi Meets Students Protesting At Jantar Mantar Amid Indefinite Hunger Strike

Azmi is one of the strongest voices supporting the cause behind the ongoing protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. Ladakhi activist Sonam Wangchuk has been taken to the hospital after his health deteriorated; students and members of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) are still protesting. Neha Bora, a PhD scholar at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), is also on an indefinite hunger strike. She completed 21 days of fasting on Saturday. As she continues protesting, Bora thanked Shabana for her support. The actress visited Jantar Mantar to stand by the protestors amid failing health conditions.

Shabana Azmi's message for Sonam Wangchuk

On July 14, Shabana urged Sonam Wangchuk to end his hunger strike for the better future of Indian education. She wrote on Instagram, “Dear Sonam Wangchuk, our country needs a person like you. You stand against injustice, stand for truth, we are proud of you. That's why we request you to break your fast because your guidance for our students increases their courage. This fight has to be fought till the end, so you need to be healthy. We are with you.”

Why are students protesting at Jantar Mantar?

On Saturday, members of the All India Students Federation (AISF), the Students Federation of India (SFI) and All India Students' Association (AISA) joined a protest organised by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) at Delhi's Jantar Mantar. The protestors have been demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan after the NEET paper leak fiasco. The joint demonstration witnessed students and political activists raising slogans and carrying placards to press their various demands.

According to ANI, this development comes after Wangchuk was taken to Safdarjung Hospital by Delhi Police on Saturday morning after completing 20 days of his hunger strike. The news came two days ahead of a proposed march to Parliament on July 20 by Wangchuk and his supporters. Amid the protest, there is heavy police deployment at Jantar Mantar.
