The Odyssey Leaked Online: Pirated Version Reaches Millions On X Before Takedown; Universal Studios Responds

Nolan's The Odyssey, which released in cinemas on July 17, has become the latest Hollywood blockbuster to fall victim to online piracy after a high-quality version of the film surfaced on X (formerly Twitter). The unauthorised version went viral, getting millions of views before it was removed and accounts behind it were suspended. Despite the leak, the epic continues to perform well at the global box office, inching closer to the USD 700 million milestone. Production firm Universal Pictures has since responded to the leak , stating that it acted immediately.

The Odyssey Pirated Version Goes Viral On X

A high-quality pirated version of Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey was uploaded to X on July 25 by an anonymous account that has since been suspended. According to Variety, a post on X saying, "Someone uploaded The Odyssey full movie on X. Can you believe it?" got attention to a now-suspended account that had shared a high-quality pirated version of the film. The upload received more than 2.1 million views in just two and a half hours before it was removed. X later replaced the video with a copyright takedown notice and suspended the account responsible for posting it.

Although the original upload was removed, several copies briefly appeared on the platform. Many of those were later replaced with 'Rickroll' videos, misleading users into watching Rick Astley's 1987 hit Never Gonna Give You Up instead of the film. Ryan Gosling's Barbie was similarly leaked on X, alongside other major releases such as The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Avatar 3.

Universal Responds As Box Office Remains Unaffected

Following the leak, Universal Pictures issued an official statement confirming that it had acted swiftly to remove the upload. "We became aware of the unauthorised posting of the film and immediately initiated takedown protocols. We take copyright infringement seriously and will pursue all appropriate remedies to protect our content and intellectual property rights," the studio posted in a statement. The Odyssey, which was shot entirely using IMAX cameras, continues to post impressive box office numbers and remains on track to become one of Nolan's biggest commercial successes. Despite the leak attracting millions of views on social media, The Odyssey has continued its impressive theatrical run. According to Sacnilk, the Christopher Nolan directorial has grossed nearly USD 640 million worldwide against its reported USD 270 million budget within its first 10 days in cinemas. In India, the film has earned Rs 142.86 crore gross and Rs 119.65 crore net.
