What is the story about?
Indian
courts have been choking the necks of online platforms for all the obvious reasons. However, a latest ruling by the Delhi High Court could result in an invasion of privacy. According to a December 2025 ruling from the High Court of Delhi, 14 directives have been issues to major registrars about handling the identity and privacy of the users, and this is not limited to India. Justice Pratibha M Singh ruled the registrars into identity gatekeepers with tight disclosure deadlines and zero tolerance for default anonymity. Registrars like GoDaddy, Namecheap, and Hosting Concepts have been asked to share all the user details without animosity. The court announced that the following things are mandatory:
- Government ID verification mandatory at the time of signup, self declaration will not be accepted.
- WHOIS masking becomes a paid add-on, available only after identity verification.
- Registrant personal data must be handed to courts or rights holders on request.
- Domains resembling known brands are prohibited before going live.
- Registrars who refuse risk being cut off from India completely under Section 69A.
