The
Grammy Awards are entering a new era with several significant changes. The Recording Academy has announced five new categories along with major updates to eligibility rules and artist recognition policies. Among the additions, the introduction of Best Asian Pop Music Performance is being viewed as a landmark move that could open new doors for K-pop, J-pop, C-pop and even artists from India who create music in Asian languages. The updates also expand recognition for songwriters and composers while making it easier for more albums and emerging artists to qualify for Grammy consideration.
Best Asian Pop Music Performance Could Be A Game-Changer
The most talked-about addition is undoubtedly the new
Best Asian Pop Music Performance category. The award will recognise artistic excellence in Asian pop music performances originating from or widely recognised within Asian markets, including K-pop, J-pop and C-pop. Eligible works must also feature meaningful use of one or more Asian languages. The category is expected to create a dedicated space for artists who have traditionally competed in broader international categories. Major K-pop acts such as
BTS, BLACKPINK, SEVENTEEN and rising Asian artists could benefit from increased visibility during awards season.
For Indian musicians, the change is equally significant. Songs performed in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Punjabi and other Indian languages could potentially gain greater recognition if they achieve substantial impact within Asian music markets. Artists such as Diljit Dosanjh will definitely benefit from this new category.
Four More Categories Added By Grammys
The Recording Academy has also introduced four additional categories -
Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group PerformanceThis category honors contemporary R&B performances by established duos, groups, or collaborative projects involving solo artists and groups. As a result of this addition, the existing Best R&B Performance category has been renamed Best R&B Solo Performance.
Best Traditional Pop Vocal PerformanceThe new award recognises excellence in traditional pop recordings that cannot easily be categorised alongside modern pop music. It is designed to celebrate classic vocal styles and timeless songwriting traditions.
Best Traditional Folk AlbumTraditional folk music will now receive its own dedicated category. Albums featuring traditional folk recordings can compete here, while the former Best Folk Album category has been renamed Best Contemporary Folk Album.
Best Latin SongThis award recognises songwriters behind newly written Latin songs that are predominantly in Spanish. Unlike performance-based awards, the honour specifically celebrates songwriting achievement.
Major Eligibility Changes Announced
Beyond new categories, the Recording Academy has revised several eligibility rules. The Best New Artist category has been updated to provide greater flexibility. Artists can now be submitted up to four times instead of three, reflecting the increasingly non-linear nature of music careers and artist development.
Meanwhile, album eligibility requirements have been relaxed. Previously, an album needed 75% new recordings to qualify. The threshold has now been lowered to 66%, allowing more projects that are widely considered new albums to remain eligible. The Grammys are also adapting to modern music consumption habits. Internet-only releases can now qualify for Best Album Notes and Best Historical Album, provided the accompanying notes and materials are included as part of the commercial digital release. This ensures digital-first projects are not disadvantaged compared to physical releases.Another notable update focuses on the creators behind the music. Songwriters and composers of new material on winning albums in most genre album categories will now receive Grammy statuettes and Achievement Certificates. Previously, producers and engineers often received similar recognition, while many songwriters did not receive equal acknowledgement.
