Vijay's Jana Nayagan may have delivered a solid opening at the worldwide box office, but it failed to rewrite the record books. Directed by H Vinoth, the political action drama grossed over Rs 80 crore globally on its opening day, securing a place among the biggest Tamil openers of all time. However, the film fell short of several major milestones, including overtaking Rajinikanth's Coolie, which remains the biggest worldwide opener for a Tamil film. Jana Nayagan enters top 10 worldwide Tamil openers: Coolie Tops List

Jana Nayagan, starring Vijay alongside Mamitha Baiju, Bobby Deol and Pooja Hegde, collected Rs 42.70 crore net in India on its opening day, according to trade tracker Sacnilk. The film's India gross stands at Rs 50.28 crore, while it added Rs 30 crore from overseas markets, taking its worldwide gross to Rs 80.28 crore. The earnings have helped the film secure the ninth spot among the biggest worldwide Day 1 openings for a Tamil film. The current rankings are led by Rajinikanth's Coolie, which opened to a staggering Rs 151.7 crore worldwide. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, the 2025 action thriller went on to become the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2025.

Despite registering a strong opening, Jana Nayagan debuted at the ninth spot among the biggest worldwide Day 1 openings for a Tamil film. The list continues to be led by Rajinikanth's Coolie, which collected Rs 151.7 crore globally, followed by Vijay's Leo (Rs 142.96 crore), 2.0 (Rs 110 crore), The Greatest Of All Time (Rs 99.39 crore), Jailer (Rs 97.05 crore), Kabali (Rs 87.5 crore), Beast (Rs 85.2 crore) and Ponniyin Selvan 1 (Rs 82.5 crore). Jana Nayagan earned Rs 80.28 crore worldwide on its opening day, ahead of Vettaiyan, which collected Rs 67.76 crore.

Despite its impressive debut, Jana Nayagan narrowly missed three major box office milestones. The film failed to enter the coveted Rs 100 crore worldwide opening club, finishing nearly Rs 20 crore short of the mark. It also could not surpass Vijay's previous Day 1 worldwide record set by The Greatest Of All Time, which opened with Rs 99.39 crore globally. Additionally, with an overseas gross of Rs 30 crore, the film missed out on a place among the top five biggest overseas openings for a Tamil film. The action drama also could not surpass Vijay's previous Day 1 worldwide record set by The Greatest Of All Time as well.
