Inside Salman Khan's battle with 'suicide disease'
For those unaware,
Salman has trigeminal neuralgia, an extremely painful chronic facial pain disorder often referred to as the "suicide disease." The condition causes sudden, intense, electric shock-like pain on one side of the face. Patients often experience severe discomfort while eating, chewing, speaking or even touching their face due to disrupted nerve signals. The pain can significantly impact daily life, making the condition extremely difficult to live with.Last year, the superstar opened up about his battle with the condition. On Kajol and Twinkle Khanna's Two Much, he spoke about first experiencing it in 2007 while shooting
Partner with Lara Dutta. He said that one has to learn to live with such conditions and added that many people cope with bypass surgeries, heart ailments and other health issues. Recalling his struggle with trigeminal neuralgia, he said the pain was so severe that he would not wish it upon his worst enemy."I had it for seven-and-a-half years. It used to hurt every four-five minutes. It would happen suddenly, while talking... It used to take me about an hour and a half to have my breakfast, and I used to go straight to dinner. For an omelette, because I couldn't chew it, I had to force myself, hurt myself, take as much pain, so I could get rid of the meal," he shared.
The
Sikandar actor further said that he was taking around 750 mg of painkillers, but they provided little relief. Initially, doctors believed it was a dental issue. When asked if anything eased the pain, Salman said he noticed it would reduce slightly after having a drink or two, only to return later. This eventually led doctors to identify it as a nerve-related problem. He recalled undergoing Gamma Knife Surgery and revealed that the procedure involved having screws attached to his face for nearly eight hours. After the surgery, doctors said that his pain might reduce by 20–30 percent. However, Salman said that by God's grace, the pain disappeared completely.Trigeminal neuralgia has one of the highest suicide rates among sufferers because of its extreme pain. Salman said that many people are still unaware of the disease and that he chose to speak about it to raise awareness.
