Bollywood
actress Huma Qureshi is currently seen in Baby Do Die Do, which has been backed by her and brother Saqib Saleem's production banner. The action thriller features Huma in a dark and intense role as a deaf and mute contract killer from Mumbai. Her performance and the film have received appreciation from fans and critics. Amid the praise, Huma recently opened up about Bollywood's tendency to portray female assassins through "tight-fitting clothes" and a "hyper-sexualised" image. She called such representations misogynistic and said they often cater to the male gaze. With Baby Do Die Do, Huma aims to challenge these stereotypes and bring a fresh perspective to the portrayal of female action characters.
Huma Qureshi SLAMS Bollywood's 'Hyper-Sexualised' Femme Fatale
Baby Do Die Do actress-producer Huma hopes that her movie will encourage filmmakers to create more compelling and diverse roles for women. She also feels that while there is still room for improvement, things are moving in the right direction when it comes to writing better roles. In an interview with
PTI, Huma said that what made
the story of
Baby Do Die Do interesting was the fact that her character was a normal-looking woman who turned out to be a deadly killer. She added that the team wanted to create a relatable character like someone one could easily meet in a Mumbai local train without noticing. Calling the portrayal of female assassins a "misogynist way" of looking at such characters, Huma said, "That women have to be in these tight-fitting clothes, hyper sexualised sort of imagery to be able to be assassins. I think it is coming from patriarchy."
Huma also spoke about how her character’s disability was shown as her biggest strength rather than a weakness. She said that people often view disabilities, especially among women, as limitations, but the character proved that it could become her greatest asset.
