Wikipedia Co-founder Larry Sanger is facing a permanent ban from the platform. According to his statement, the founder tried to introduce changes to Wikipedia that would make it more open and balanced. On the other hand, Wikipedia editors say that the co-founder was banned because he broke the community rules by trying to influence internal discussions from outside the platform. For those who are unaware, Larry Sanger cofounded Wikipedia alongside Jimmy Wales and helped name the platform as well. He revealed that he was first blocked from the platform indefinitely before the permanent ban came flying. According to him, this shows Wikipedia is no longer the open platform it pretends to be. As for the dispute, it began after Sanger introduced
WikiProject Intellectual Diversity, which is an initiative focused at encouraging broader viewpoints on Wikipedia. Furthermore, he also shared details of the proposal with his followers on X also asking them to take part in the discussion. And yes, Wikipedia administrators stated this amounted to 'canvassing' using off-platform channels to influence internal decision-making, which hampers the community guidelines of the site.Reports also say that the initial block on Sanger was lifted before the standard discussion period concluded, but administrators later reinstated it after concluding there was clear consensus for an indefinite ban. Sanger also rejected that explanation, dubbing the process a 'kangaroo court' and alleging that the administrators are using the rules as they please. Both sides remain strong in their positions, and Sanger also said that he was banned for trying to improve Wikipedia and expose problems in how it is governed. Wikipedia editors said that the action taken against Sanger was based on a process instead of criticism itself, arguing that he violated community rules by attempting to influence internal consensus. It will be interesting to see if Wikipedia gives back a response to the allegations made by Sanger in detail or not.
