Johnny Depp Gatecrashes Comic-Con 2026 As Ebenezer In Hollywood Comeback

newest adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol, is coming this holiday season. Johnny Depp is set to play the title character in Paramount's upcoming feature film Ebenezer. As the trailer of the film was released, the star of the film made a surprise appearance at Comic-Con on July 23, 2026, where he greeted fans in character and also gatecrashed a directors' panel. Depp is making his big Hollywood comeback in Ebenezer. His last studio film was Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald in 2018; he was asked to step down from the franchise in 2020 by Warner Bros. amid allegations that he abused his ex-wife Amber Heard.

Johnny Depp returns to Comic-Con, surprises fans as Ebenezer

The official account of the film on X (formerly Twitter) posted several videos of Depp interacting with fans in character, grumbling as the grumpy Ebenezer Scrooge. The actor appeared to step out of a fake Victorian store called Scrooge and Marley, and he completely remained in character as Ebenezer, whispering "Humbug" under his breath. The actor also met a fan who was dressed up as one of his characters, Edward Scissorhands.

Depp has been positioning Ebenezer as his big Hollywood comeback. Last year, he promoted the film at the Red Sea Film Festival and, earlier this year, showed up at CinemaCon to support the film. The Pirates of the Caribbean actor is making his third appearance at Comic-Con; he came to promote the films Alice in Wonderland and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald in 2009 and 2018, respectively.

Besides mingling with fans, Depp also gatecrashed a directors' panel at Comic-Con which featured Weapons filmmaker Zach Cregger. After his appearance, the trailer of Ebenezer was shown. The actor pretended to offer the panel attendees some candy and, after the trailer, stated, "It's good to be back" as he walked off. The trailer makes references to Depp's iconic characters from Jack Sparrow, Edward Scissorhands and the Mad Hatter.

The upcoming Paramount film is directed by the X filmmaker Ti West. The rest of the ensemble cast features Andrea Riseborough as the Ghost of Christmas Past, Tramell Tillman as the Ghost of Christmas Present, Ian McKellen as Jacob Marley and Rupert Grint as Bob Cratchit. Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley, Arthur Conti, Ellie Bamber, Charlie Murphy, and Henry Lloyd-Hughes also star in the Christmas story Ebenezer, which is releasing in theatres on November 13, 2026.
