To
compete with Anthropic, Sam Altman's OpenAI recently launched its latest AI models under the GPT-5.6 family -- Sol, Terra and Luna. The AI startup says these models can handle everything from coding and research to cybersecurity tasks.GPT-5.6 Sol is the most advanced model in the lineup, as per OpenAI. It is better at helping people find and fix vulnerabilities than reliably carrying out end-to-end attacks. "As these capabilities continue to advance, our priority is to make sure they reach and benefit defenders, who can use these tools to find weaknesses, develop patches, and strengthen systems more broadly," the company said in a blog post.
Terra, on the other hand, is a more balanced version that offers strong performance at a lower cost, while Luna is the fastest and most affordable option for everyday use.
OpenAI says these models come with its strongest safety systems so far."We developed GPT‑5.6 Sol, Terra and Luna with our most robust safeguards to date, with configurations matched to each model’s capabilities," OpenAI said in a blog post."As the model becomes more capable, we design safeguards to increasingly hold up to real-world adversarial pressure while preserving access to legitimate work such as code review, vulnerability research, patch development, debugging, security education, and defensive testing," it added. As per ChatGPT-maker, the research team spent weeks testing them against real-world risks, especially to prevent misuse in cyber attacks or harmful activities. The focus is to ensure that security experts and developers can still use these tools for defensive purposes, such as fixing bugs and improving systems.
Why Access Is LimitedHowever, these new models are not available to everyone yet. OpenAI has rolled out GPT-5.6 in a limited preview. This means only a small group of trusted partners in the United States can access it for now. Regular users, developers and even ChatGPT users cannot try these models at this stage. The biggest reason behind this restricted launch is security. The US government has asked OpenAI to limit access after these models received a 'high' rating in areas like cybersecurity and biological capabilities.
