Set to Olivia Rodrigo’s new track Stupid Song, Heartstopper Forever checks back in with long-time couple Nick Nelson (Kit Connor) and Charlie Spring (Joe Locke), who are about to embark on a long-distance relationship. Their friends are also growing up alongside them as the finale film says a lot of goodbyes after three seasons of Heartstopper. The British series first premiered on Netflix in April 2022 and became a breakthrough hit. The franchise was not renewed for a fourth and final season and instead will wrap up with a feature on July 17.

On social media, Netflix introduced the swansong to the series by stating, "Our lives are better because we met them." The trailer shows frequent parallels to the past three seasons of Heartstopper as the teenage couple has grown up together. They walk hand-in-hand at the beach as they promise to always be there for each other. Before that, though, there is anxiety about the future as Nick is leaving to go away for university and Charlie is settling in as the head boy. Do they still need each other?

Their friends are also dealing with similar issues of maturing, albeit with different levels than Nick and Charlie. There are glimpses of their friends' group as Tao (William Gao), Elle (Yasmin Finney), Darcy (Kizzy Edgell), Tara (Corinna Brown), Imogen (Rhea Norwood), and Isaac (Tobie Donovan) all return to give them advice as there are incidents of jealousy and even a bit of a rugby fight on the field. Creator and writer Oseman states that the film will take a slightly grittier look at romance and what it is to be in a long-term relationship. It will be different than the series that began like a fairy tale and was idealistic. Directed by Wash Westmoreland, Heartstopper Forever is executive produced by Patrick Walters, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, Oseman, and Season 1 and 2 director Euros Lyn and stars Connor and Locke.
