Altman's OpenAI has hired Dean Ball, a former AI policy adviser in the Trump administration, to lead a newly created team focused on the future of artificial intelligence policy and governance.Ball will head OpenAI's new Strategic Futures team. In this role, he will help shape the company's approach to frontier AI policy, governance, and long-term planning as AI systems become more powerful. Ball is a well-known voice in AI policy circles."I am pleased and honored to announce that, on July 6, I'll be joining @OpenAI as leader of a new team called Strategic Futures. Our mandate will be to help the company's leadership shape frontier AI policy. There is a ton of work to do, and I'm excited to get started.," he wrote on X.
He previously served as Senior Policy Adviser for AI and Emerging Technology at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Apart from his government work, he is also known for frequently writing and speaking about AI policy issues, often sharing his views through his Substack newsletter.The appointment comes at a time when AI companies are facing growing scrutiny from governments and regulators around the world. By bringing in someone with experience in Washington, OpenAI appears to be strengthening its policy and governance efforts as debates around AI safety, regulation, and innovation continue to grow.

Speaking to Axios about the move, Ball said, "The frontier lab is a new kind of institution under the sun. This is an opportunity to shape that still-nascent institution, and I am thrilled to get to work."When asked why he chose OpenAI, Ball told Axios that "many of the key breakthroughs on the path to transformative AI over the last few years were invented at OpenAI.""The talent density and energy at the company are tremendous," He added.OpenAI Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon also welcomed Ball's appointment. In a statement shared with Axios, Kwon said, "Really glad Dean is joining OpenAI."He said Ball has spent considerable time thinking about major issues that frontier AI labs must address, including risks, governance, policy challenges, and the future direction of the industry.
